#Debian has been moving more towards the deb.debian.org mirror which is provided by a single CDN company, #Fastly. It works well, but also feeds an enormous amount of #metadata to a single company, and it can be used to track computers and maybe even people. And the privacy policy in effect is unclear. Fastly says the #privacy policy of the "subscriber" applies, but the privacy policy for deb.debian.org is not listed anywhere I could find. Anyone have any insight here?
Searching for a federated communications software with closed groups.
Hey,
I just talked to an activist friend and he told me about the struggles to find the right communications software for his activist group.
He said that no software is really end to end encrypted for large group chats and calls. (Is that true?)
So he is searching for something instead where the metadata is hidden and which is federated.
He was asking me if #Mastodon was the right thing, but Mastodon doesn't have groups yet. (When?)
So I suggested #Lemmy, but Lemmy doesn't have hidden/closed communities, right?
Testing Pixelfed with Facebook linter. One of the best ways of publicising how good fedi apps are is to share them in other platforms - it shows their quality, unless of course it doesn't. Pixelfed.de has configured their open graph og:image correctly, but pixelfed.social has not. This is disappointing.
We're an independent, community-focused organization that wants to figure out how to keep #Flickr around for 100 years, preserving our shared visual #commons for future generations.
Let’s say it’s possible to implement a standard for alt-text/image description metadata that’s embedded within an image file, and a toolset exists for converting between that and the img tag in HTML. Would this be something people would be interested in seeing?

what's the deal with #GoogleScholar constantly reminding you to make subtle metadata updates on all the articles that it indexes on your profile. like I have done nothing, but it is constantly giving me weird and different permutations of the year and capitalization and whatnot.
yet another time I need a #metadata librarian like I need an adult
Mastodon - the distributed social network - has two interesting challenges when it comes to how users share links. I'd like to discuss those issues and suggest a possible way forward. Apple admits to secretly giving governments push notification data: Push notifications contain useful metadata
Push notifications are used to provide a wide variety of alerts to app users. A friendly ding or text alert on the home screen notifies users about new text messages, emails, social media comments, news updates, packages delivered, gameplay nudges—basically a ...continues
Have a look at #Zoom's new #terms, especially §10, which took effect on July 27th.
They can do whatever they like with your "Customer #Content" (session recordings, uploaded files, …) now, also with the related #metadata ("Service Generated Data"): machine learning, "sharing", … - "for any purpose, to the extent and in the manner permitted under applicable Law".
I'd say this sinks Zoom as an option within the #EU. No way to make this remotely compatible with the #GDPR.
The Guide to Peer-to-Peer, Encryption, and Tor: New Communication Infrastructure for Anarchists
"An exhaustive anarchist overview and guide to various apps and tech that utilize peer-to-peer and encryption.
Shhhhh
This is a discussion about digital tools for communicating securely and privately. To begin, it must be stressed that a face-to-face meeting, out of sight of cameras and out of earshot from other people and devices, is the most secure way to communicate. Anarchists were going for walks to chat long before encrypted texting existed, and they should still do so now, whenever possible."
I know Daijisho automatically scrapes, which is cool, but I'm not always crazy about the way it scrapes box art. I have an emulation station setup on my PC and I'd really like to copy the box art images from there and import them into Daijisho, but I can't find where those images are stored on my Android device (Retroid Pocket...
PS: I support this move. It will help establish ROR as the #standard ID for institutional affiliation. RINGGOLD IDs are #proprietary and ROR IDs are in the #PublicDomain under #CC0.
We are trying to figure out which distortion correction algorithm is used in the embedded lens correction metadata in Nikon Z series cameras! It seems to not be ptlens (which is used by lensfun).
Digging a little bit in the some ICC profiles added in signal-app, I updated the original issue and there is clearly an issue where new ICC profiles are created from the Google skia library.
This issue only appears when the media-quality is to high. Maybe an allow-list strategy like the mat2 tool written by @jvoisin would be better to be sure that new metadata created are discarded by default.

Each digital document has metadata like the name of the document or its size. In DEVONthink, you can also define your own custom metadata. We created a tutorial that shows you how to do this. #devonthink#tutorial#pkm#metadatahttps://buff.ly/3WTMVfS
