I think that it's absolutely horrifying that the average person can't purchase and stock antivenom, antibiotics, steroids, epinephrine, insulin, or IV saline fluids.

The very act of saying this is radical. gasp! But we can't be trusted with such things! The lay person would give out antibiotics with abandon, fail to properly place an IV, give epinephrine when it isn't indicated! People would die!

This is what we've been taught, and it's bullshit. It doesn't take twelve years of medical school to identify anaphylaxis, especially in someone you know. Most people are concerned enough about the side effects of antibiotics to reserve them for when they're really necessary (and the average household is NOT the cause of widespread antibiotic resistant organisms: industrial livestock and our own medical establishment are). It doesn't take more than a week to learn how to properly place an IV. It doesn't take a genius to administer antivenom if someone is bit by a snake.

But you know what this access would do? Save people. From death, from severe disability, from tens of thousands of dollars of medical bills that make them wish they'd just died in the first place.

These skills could be taught to 8th graders in school. It isn't complicated. First aid, wilderness medicine, and basic life support training needs to go beyond "call for help when you identify x, y, and z". Medical care, especially emergency medical care, should be a basic human right, and by this I mean we should have the right to administer it to ourselves and our community without barriers.

Reserve the hospital for true surgical emergencies. I don't want to take out my child's appendix, for example, without an OR and anesthetics. But there is an extremely wide range of mild to moderate ailments and even real emergencies that could be treated better and more immediately IN PLACE if the average person had access to the right equipment and the most basic accessible training that could easily be passed on to other community members.

Can more folks please help to boost my #dentures #medical #fundraising link? I'm hoping to raise enough by April to book appointment to start getting full dentures made.
I don't have supplementals on my medical insurance to cover dentures. I only have enough to cover full extractions from dentist. I'm unable to work FT due to other medical related issues.

I need funding help for medical fees for dentures.

“What would your course of action be if you saw a healthy, #able-bodied individual get out of a vehicle that they just parked in a #handicapped #parking space?”

“A number of people close to me have invisible #disabilities. They look healthy and able-bodied, but they’re really not. Their conditions are just as real and disabling as those of anyone who needs a #cane, a #walker, or a #wheelchair to get around. And their #physicians agree, which is why they’re authorized to park in handicapped spaces. Unless you have the appropriate #medical training and have conducted a thorough examination, you have no grounds to dispute this.

“So if your course of action is to challenge them, shout at them, threaten them, or demand that they prove to your satisfaction that they’re “really” disabled … my healthy, able-bodied course of action will be to introduce you to what #disability feels like, up close and personal. That process won’t be fun for you, but you’ll have a much greater understanding afterward, for whatever remains of your miserable life.”

So, it turns out some get tubes placed in their ears to help with air circulation through their eustachian tubes during pressure changes. From what I understand the tubes fall out at 6 months. They are inserted via small hole in the ear drum. My QUESTION: is it safe to put in tubes multiple times? Do the tiny eardrum holes scar over each time, build up and affect hearing? Is there a limit to how many times tubes can be placed in?

Adventures of a #medical writer.

Went to a #Canadian medical conference today. It took over 4 floors of a hotel, probably 2,500 attendees. Medical conferences are often a good source for news and a chance to do in-person interviews.

This conference was unusually confusing.

The main talks were all listed ok in the program book -- titles, location, time. But there were about 8 concurrent sessions that had collections of short 10-15 minute presentations -- with nothing that told you what those short presentations were, except maybe general headings of "clinical research" or "basic science". Hard to plan for.

There was a conference app that was supposed to help. It didn't work. I heard other people complaining about it. The search bar never turned up results. And the display was half covered by a logo making for anything hard to read on a phone screen.

Yesterday, I read through over 200 abstracts. That book didn't break any of the studies described into categories -- it was just one big long random list. So, no clues to help figure out which sessions they'd be presented at.

I wandered over to the place where all the research posters for the day were hanging up. There will be a different group of them up tomorrow -- but nothing that lists which poster will be hanging up on which day. On the bright side, I did find a few of the studies I was looking for that I had thought would be oral presentations. Yeah!

Oh, and for the poster abstracts, the association gave me a list of abstracts for posters that were presented at some meeting in Manitoba last June!

They did provide a nice hot lunch. I saw 1 small table with a line-up of about 100 people who had left sessions all at the same time. So, I grabbed a free chicken wrap from the exhibitor hall instead.

Always an adventure!
