I'm working on the @loops Camera

The challenge is to optimize the video as much as possible (on device) before upload to reduce load on the backend.

A 15s video (with audio) is just under 800kb at 480p30 using h265, not bad 😎

The oldest 30 active pixelfed.social users will be invited to beta test @loops this weekend if everything goes as planned.

More pixelfed.social users will be invited over the next few weeks and eventually we'll be ready to open to everyone.

I want to get Loops shipped ASAP, even if it means delaying some major features (comments, notifications, mentions, hashtags) by a few weeks.

I would absolutely love to get my hands on the new @loops Android or iOS app by @dansup to start using it and testing it.

As many of you know, I do beta testing all day everyday since I work for a large Android app and most all of the software I use is beta of some form.

It would make for a great experience to dive in early and see what it's all about and report feedback as much as possible to help make it the best app out there today!

I’m considering imposing some limit like Loops get deleted after 1 month or you can only have 20 loops at a time.

It would def give it a diff vibe than TikTok and encourage less staged and more in the moment content I think.

So while I was working on the @loops backend tonight, I decided to implement support for username changes.

You will be able to change your loops username without breaking federation or existing links!

I'm working on a FEP so other projects can implement this too

I am a bit worried about publishing the #loops mobile app source code, specifically the camera logic

There are no existing libraries or examples, that I'm aware of, that do what Loops Camera does

I'm mostly worried about shady clone apps or other uses that violate our license

I think an amicable solution would be to publish the app source, but with a placeholder basic camera while shipping the full camera to App Stores

Loops is a separate project from @pixelfed

You will be able to use your PF account to login/join, but you will have a separate fedi account

I'm keeping Pixelfed focused around photo sharing, you won't need to worry about us integrating #loops into our main app!

Similar to Sup, we're keeping this separate, but easily accessible from the main app

Also, I'm looking for a project manager for Loops to takeover when ready so I can focus on coding and they tell me what to do!

I successfully implemented the Stitch feature in Loops, it allows you to combine an existing video with your own without having to download, re-upload, splice, etc.

It's similar to TikTok Stitch, and you will have the ability to disable this feature on your own videos so they can't be Stitched!
