@enantiomer Thanks for sharing this. I'm in a similar place with my practice. I have found over the years that my dedication waxes and wanes. Lately I've been trying to use objects in my environment at those times of day to trigger me to think of the Sun. E.g. when I see an analog clock, I should imagine the Sun symbol over it, which would remind me to think of Resh or even just to spend a moment envisioning myself on the barque and Thoth destroying whatever obstacle I have at the moment.

Not sure if this is a #Mastodon feed issue or client issue, but I really wish there was a way to not display trending links to walled content (NYT etc). Filters don't seem to take these link cards into account either...

@publicvoit @dhry How is there a "great deal of vendor lock-in" with Obsidian??? At it's core Obsidian is just a client for markdown files with wikilinking... files which are portable with dozens of editors on all platforms. Orgmode, as a file format, is a lot more niche, and I would say much more of a locked-in ecosystem.

What I love more than anything is when I hear about some exotic new software. Software which seems like it will solve some really irritating problem for me. And as soon as I cross the threshold into the community I witness massive online wars between factions of users and developers. And is this what it feels like to be a colonist?

I have to take a short weekend trip to Montana and after considering different transit options, I decided to rent a car and drive; it's a bit of a road trip, but I found great rental deals and was excited to rent an electric car to try it out as we're considering buying one.

lol, Montana is huge and has hardly any charging stations on the route 🙃 According to one of the EV charging maps there are single chargers in towns about 150 miles apart, which seems dicey to me?

@ktemkin Just getting started with Nix (for both macOS and Linux) and looking at online guides... some of these assume you'll run the official installer, others assume you'll do the determinatesystems installer (which apparently depends on "experimental" and "extra-experiemental" features... but Don't Panic... everyone is taking part in the experiments). So I guess what I find bothersome is the disconnect between official Nix and what 99% of the community seems to be doing with Nix.

I dislike the part about firehose ephemeral social media where you see something, scroll away, and since infinite scroll is a thing or you otherwise navigate away - its ....gone, poof. And you might be able to re-find it if you're lucky, but Search is inconsistently applied.

Q: Are there any Mastodon apps/interfaces/forks that keep tabs on, like, your last 1000 posts seen (e.g. actually displayed on your viewer for more than .5 sec), maybe across the enhanced web interface? #AskFedi

@knizer Mastodon has a bookmark feature which I use to mark anything I might want to come back to again. I believe bookmarks are not public like favorites. Some clients make bookmarking easier than others.

poll: do you prefer git fetch or git pull?

(no lectures about why you think git pull is bad please but if you use both I'd be curious to hear in what cases you use fetch!)

@b0rk If I'm working on a branch and want to create a new branch, I usually run git fetch origin then git checkout -b newbranch origin/main. In general, I run fetch before pull and I usually only pull when I can ffwd.

What unnecessary plastic packaging drives you crazy?

I'll start with something I noticed this morning. Cereal used to come in waxed paper bags inside the box, not plastic. It was fine. This was the 70s, maybe even the 80s.

This post about extended producer responsibility legislation for plastics got me thinking about it. #PlasticWaste

Non-metric liquid measures are seriously fucked-up. TIL that a US Tbsp is a different quantity than a UK Tbsp or an AU Tbsp. And then Cups are like... 🤯 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cup_(unit)

I discovered Tbsps being different when double checking my US-to-metric conversions in two different search engines and coming up with different results! interpreted my input as "Imperial" Tbsp instead of US Tbsp ( and gave me US by default).

Lately I've been trying to create a Yorkshire Pudding like my grandmother used to make. Today was my second attempt. This time I used Raddish Kids "Magical Popovers" as my base recipe (and using their #vegan modifications).Today's result was too thick and somewhat bland, but not bad. Next time I may try using Kala Namak for salt and perhaps adding some drippings from sauteed mushrooms.

Have been using #Logseq a tiny bit, via iCloud syncing, for some quick and simple daily journal bullet points. Today all of a sudden it stopped syncing. Edits on Windows didn't show up on mobile. Then I cleared cache and all of a sudden it erased everything I entered for today on mobile. Except for one line. Fine. I then added a couple more bullets on Windows and it's not syncing again.

I get that iCloud is a little flaky, but if you say you support syncing with it then SYNC WITH IT.
