It's pre-Friday and that means it's time to open up Greenhouse/Lever/Workday and see if there are any roles for a senior software engineer lurking around! 😆

Seriously, though, I'm still on the prowl (hasn't been long but feels like a month) for a software engineering role!

https://www.linkedin.com/in/jacky-alcine is my LinkedIn and https://jacky.wtf/work is my handwritten version of that.

I'm open to contract roles (ideally short term, ~3 months) and to FTE roles!

This led me to learn about Neeva (never heard of it until now) and found https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/20/23731397/neeva-search-engine-google-shutdown

From the article, "building the search engine was actually the easy part. “Throughout this journey, we’ve discovered that it is one thing to build a search engine, and an entirely different thing to convince regular users of the need to switch to a better choice,” Ramaswamy and Raghunathan continued.

Technology is always secondary to social functionality. This makes the need to push peers and folks to not succumb solely to corporate branding campaigns vital.

Slightly related to companies using capital and resources to consolidate market power, I did see a TikTok today that led me to this: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/21/technology/apple-doj-lawsuit-antitrust.html

The US government has been saying F/LOSS advocates have been saying for decades, following:

"The department joined 16 states and the District of Columbia to file a significant challenge to the reach and influence of Apple, arguing in an 88-page lawsuit that the company had violated antitrust laws with practices that were intended to keep customers reliant on their iPhones and less likely to switch to a competing device. The tech giant prevented other companies from offering applications that compete with Apple products like its digital wallet, which could diminish the value of the iPhone, and hurts consumers and smaller companies that compete with it, the government said".

Undue loyalty to the company (or to any, companies aren't people) hasn't ever been merited and this is a ringing reminder.

Okay question:

I have both https://github.com/nvim-telescope/telescope.nvim and https://github.com/folke/trouble.nvim going for me.

trouble's approach gives me more of the IDE/IntelliJ energy whereas telescope gives me more of the Sublime Text pop-over that (IMO) it pioneered (to me).

Does anyone use one over/instead of the other and if so, why?

Glad I found this photo in Nextcloud because the use of the term "racism" gets confused as "ouchie, my feelings" and it's not that at all.

This is giving Naomi Klein/Wolf energy (in terms of the shift from people's responses and in reference to how she saw Wolf as a doppelganger outside herself - in this case, it's within and without self awareness)

I love that a multi-billion-dollar corporation like RedHat/IBM can ship an operating system with a broken screen reader in 2024 (it’s not just them, it’s true for basically every major Linux distribution today) and, when you point it out, the response is “it’s no one’s fault… it’s all free labour… it’s FOSS, man”. And then: oh, and this charity is paying for one person to work on accessibility support to be implemented now… Anyone else see how fucked up that is?

> Often, the tasks, for which they use Linux loaded gadgets, require people to not be visually impaired due to nature of work itself and tools just enhance it, and therefore accessibility is irrelevant in their context of use.

> Where I personally think the pressure matters most (economically) is in embargoing any economic activity that legitimizes settlers in the West Bank or Gaza.

That's discussed in short in the essay from Dollars and Sense I linked, to a degree that the majority of American investments can be made.

Regarding a "flawed" perspective on apartheid, I'm not sure I understand. I'm also deeply uncomfortable with comparing "apartheids" because it immediately reduces lives into statistics and that serves no one but colonizing forces.
