@njion brains are strange things sometimes. I don't think there's a blueprint on how we're supposed to work so arguably we're all a bit broken, and it can definitely feel like that sometimes. But you can do it 🩵 life doesn't have to be perfect, to be really good :dragon_hug:

When are you part of "the rich"?

Feel free to comment if you think the line isn't on here and it should e.g be lower or higher.

If you have (in assets or cash):

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

Note, technically speaking if you select the first option, many average working class people that just happen to have a house, that cannot simply e.g go out and buy an expensive car with that money, will be considered part of "the rich"

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

And also note that, the truly filthy rich like Musk, Bezos, etc, are all in the 100s of billions, so they're off this chart by 2 orders of magnitude.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@eseilt if you bought a house as little as 8 years ago, you're still paying the same mortgage and don't feel rich, but you easily own 100s of thousands in "asset".

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

some further interesting metrics:

To be in the top 1% it depends on the country how much you need to have in 'net wealth', in the USA it's about 5 million, in Monaco it's about 12 million, in China it's about 1 million (see image).

But the average WAGES of the top % are:
Top 0.1% of Earners $3,312,693
Top 1% of Earners $819,324
Top 5% of Earners $335,891
Top 10% of Earners $167,639

So I think you could be in the top 1% of assets/cash, but not even make it to the top 10% in terms of wages?

anthropy, (edited )
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

When are you part of "the rich" (financial struggle edition)

Again hard to decide the scale because Musk/Bezos/etc will be off this chart by orders of magnitude (they can buy a small country on a whim), and on the other end being able to always buy luxury foods could be considered wealthy.

Oh boy had a very awkward conversation with a client

I was trying to do my best to ask as many questions as I could to ascertain what they needed, but they kept being terse and clipped in their replies

I had nothing to go on in the notes I had written so I had to tell them I couldn’t do anything because they wouldn’t answer my questions =_=

Then they hung up lol

@yassie_j imho this just goes on the list of "people that don't respect customer service don't deserve help", it's entirely in people's own interest to give the right information, it's not like you don't want to help so it can hardly be blamed on you 🤷

anthropy,

@haasyuu the Dutch monarchy makes me feel two things, they're mostly kinda genuine people who try to do good things overall but there are also big asshats like prins Bernard which has entire wiki articles and law proposals to his name for his tendency to use his royal income to buy houses and real estate, he has like 600 houses in Amsterdam alone, and also in general idk if they should be having/making as much as this, monarchy could also be a bunch more modern and less excessive tbh.

Good morning yet again!

Today I found out my thermostat hasn't been working because of an ISP outage in the area. While I am all for , this one takes the cake for me; how can people be expected to have functioning smart houses if they keep prioritising internet leeches (such as "self-hosters") over actual customers, overloading their networks?

I'm on the phone with my provider right now, the waiting times might take a while, but this is something that's gotta be said.

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@jo ISP skill issue. you can totally have self hosters and not effing kill your network, it's called QOS and maybe some level of redundancy, instead of oversubscribing a line to hell and then going surprised_pikachu.jpg when normal average users watching some netflix already overload the entire thing. This one shouldn't be blamed on self hosters, they can not fix this for you.

ordered a second hand 800w car alternator for 20€, want to try hook it up to my old exercise bike and see what I can get out of it, maybe charge some 12v batteries with it if it works

now to just get a v-belt and some mounting and tensioning gear, I already have a battery and charge controller that should do the trick, it'd be amazing if I could make this whole thing work for less than 50

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

received the alternator, seems smooth in operation which is nice, it'll probably get more heavy if there's a load on it but it's nice to have a workable baseline.
The exercise bike actually seems to have a belt similar to the car V belt, maybe I can somehow use a car V belt to make it work, although not sure where to mount the alternator yet.

#diyprojects

(Excuse my voice at the start I'm still a bit sick) Video of car alternator and exercise bike that I want to combine

anthropy,
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

@rolenthedeep I have a bunch of 12V batteries and a bunch of 12V power regulators, I was going to try and mess with that and see if I could get it working- I knew there were some differences between the designs, I think some versions even generated AC and required rectification? but I actually hadn't heard of them using electromagnets these days, I do wonder if it'll work, we'll see how it goes, thanks for the tip though!

Have something cursed, because I beer'd my laptop and it made the keyboard sticky. I'm too lazy to take it apart entirely just to fix the keyboard, so I'm just dousing it in distilled water :drgn_3c_evil:

It'll be fine.. Probably. Likely. Hopefully. Only one way to find out and that's Science! :bongo:

Video of a sink where someone is holding a laptop, the keyboard keys aren't working well (sticky) and are making crackling noises, so the laptop (with the full mobo still inside) gets hosed off with distilled water

anthropy, (edited )
@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz avatar

5 days later, still fine :drgn_sparkle: I think I'm gonna call it a win.

Would I RECOMMEND dousing your laptop in distilled water to fix sticky keys? Probably not, unless you know you can get it completely dry, or know how to take it apart, and understand the implications of doing this.

Does it WORK? The science says yes! :bongo:

edit: a slightly safer option could be isopropylalcohol, but that can also mess with some plastics so YMMV, in either case, caveat emptor
