How does "The first robotic servicing mission on the surface of Mars" sound to y'all?
Well, if you're #NASA#JPL, this awesome headline could be yours for the low cost of a few nitrogen puffs!
This thread is just me fantasizing how Perseverance could potentially use its gDRT to clean the dusty solar panel and camera lens on Ingenuity and make history with this extraordinary servicing operation! 🧵
The little rotorcraft that could, Ingenuity, has completed its last flight after an emergency landing caused damage to its rotors. 😥
Having far exceeded expectations—5 flights over 30 days turned into 72 flights over 3 years—it will now go down in history, albeit only the history remembered by space fans.
"Over an extended mission that lasted for almost 1,000 Martian days, more than 33 times longer than originally planned, Ingenuity was upgraded with the ability to autonomously choose landing sites in treacherous terrain, dealt with a dead sensor, cleaned itself after dust storms, operated from 48 different airfields, performed three emergency landings, and survived a frigid Martian winter."
To celebrate the recovery of communications with #Voyager2, here is a bunch of classic Science Magazine, Nature, and Nature Astronomy covers featuring the adventures of the epic spacecraft, now located 19.9 billion kilometers away from Earth 🌍 📡 🚀
The passage of time on Mars. On Sol-945 (Oct. 17, 2023) starting at 10:21 LMST in the morning, Ingenuity kicked off an imaging sequence with its RTE color camera while sitting idle at airfield Tau. The camera snapped a picture of the ground every five minutes and forty seconds for nearly two hours and twenty-six minutes. Note; The last frame in the GIF, the animation reverses playback. #Ingenuity#MarsHelicopter#JPL#Mars2020#NASA#Mars#Space#PerseveranceRover
Ingenuity's 54th flight as captured by the Perseverance rover. Roughly 18 seconds into each video, a pre-flight check or "wiggle" test of Ingenuity's propeller blades is performed which is seen just prior to blade spin-up and takeoff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6LfHhGGquo
Overcast skies above Jezero Crater. These enhanced images taken on Sol-965 (November 7, 2023) attempt to highlight some of the detail in the clouds, at the same time giving an 'erie' and 'stormy' look to them. This is more of an artistic stance at processing these images. Shortly after these images were taken, Perseverance looked upwards to spy a 22 degree halo overhead. #JPL#Mars2020#NASA#Mars#Space#PerseveranceRover
This was taken on Ingenuity's 70th flight which was on Sol-1009 (December 22, 2023). The camera was pointing south-west looking through the center of the Neretva Vallis river flow channel which carried rushing flows of liquid water and sediment that ultimately formed the Jezero Crater river delta billions of years ago. #Ingenuity#MarsHelicopter#JPL#Mars2020#NASA#Mars#Space#PerseveranceRover
Perseverance rover is checking out the condition of its systems after solar conjunction. In this image we can see the rover's 'Bit Carousel' (image center). The rover acquired this photo using its SHERLOC WATSON camera, located on the turret at the end of the rover's robotic arm. The raw image was acquired on December 2, 2023 (Sol 990) at the local mean solar time of 11:45. NASA/JPL-Caltech #PerseveranceRover#Marsrover#Mars#NASA#JPL
The Ingenuity team has nicknamed the spot where the helicopter completed its final flight “Valinor Hills” after the fictional location in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novels, which include “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

1/37 @nasajpl@NASA#NASA#JPL
Fresh down from Perseverance looking straight up in the martian sky taken on Sol-965 (November 7, 2023) of a 22 degree halo around the Sun. It is caused by the refraction of ice crystals in the atmosphere. This is often seen here on Earth in similar atmospheric conditions around the Sun or even the Moon. To compare, I have included an image from Sol-938 (October 10, 2023) when the Sun was near the same altitude in the sky and cloudless. #JPL#Mars2020#NASA#Mars#Space#PerseveranceRover
That sounds interesting but is quite risky, as the terrain is difficult and the rover would have to drive up into the Neretva riverbed, and across the regolith megaripple field to get a good visual of the heli, and that's assuming the #MarsHelicopter is still on the top of one of those megaripples.
The maps show visibility and terrain. Contours are 1m.
Presenting DUST OF OSIRIS, watercolor and ink, 12x12”. Inspired by the Egyptian decorative motifs, the Egyptian Revival movement, and a high-res photo of the opened OSIRIS-REx sample container, containing dust from asteroid Bennu. This has been a labor of love for me, I hope you enjoy it!
Ingenuity is no more; I was a JPL scientist when Percy & Ginny launched and landed, so they have a special place in my heart. I'm not generally sentimental about missions, but this one hurts.
Nearly done with the ink/gold portion of the #osirisrex#wip. Next up, decorative precious stone inlay (in paint, both figuratively and LITERALLY thanks to my Daniel Smith PrimaTek #watercolors), a golden center, and finally, asteroid samples!
