The git master of #Gajim by @gajim gets better and better. Now there are not only message reactions and message replies, but also an easy way to record and send voice messages! The next release will be amazing!
It is already in #Debian experimental for those who like to try it. Note, that the database gets migrated, so make a backup before running the new version!
Ok, so I got the Facebook email today about the sneaky change in their TOS to steal more user data. This time for "AI".
That's it. I deleted my account. I wasn't using it anyway, but I kept it to keep Messenger working. I created a new Messenger account instead for the handful of cases where I still need it.
I had not yet accepted the changed TOS from last year, and had to "consent" to those outrageous terms too just to get to the delete button. Clearly illegal.
I'm early in my XMPP journey, but I'm currently working on a few chatbots to get a server to what I'm calling "Discord Parity"
As I understand XMPP and have my webhook bot configured is that the bot is a user that joins a room and simply is always passively listening.
Something I've noticed in the logs is that the bot receives the xml for all activity.
This includes the plaintext communications of people.
I haven't gotten to the step of setting up OMEMO encryption for the bot and this might quell my concerns for this bot which just forwards data into the chat.
More concerning is a planned interactive bot. Since it will be waiting for commands it must listen for messages, but I don't want it snarfling all messages up.
At this stage, I think our data is better stewarded and secured by us than Discord, but it's something I'm thinking through and would love to here from any XMPP folks in the fediverse.
@jeremiah You don't have to listen to commands in the same group-chat. For example the bot could be configured in a separate 1:1 chat and only post into a group-chat. Another neat option is to allow configuration via ad-hoc commands and forms. A recent example for such a bot can be seen here: https://slixfeed.woodpeckersnest.space/posts/slixfeed-news-bot/#xmpp#jabber
If you are curious and courageous, and run #Debian testing or unstable, you might like to try the latest snapshot of #Gajim by @gajim. It features message replies and message reactions.
Expect bugs! This is not a release version, but a snapshot. It's called "experimental" for a reason.
echo "deb https://deb.debian.org/debian/ experimental main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/experimental.list

Now I have #mastodon, #email and #matrix in #emacs. Funny how communications on computers are easier to focus on without all the intense animations, colors and ads. I feel much more relaxed and ready to work when it's all texted based.
If that is not happening, then why, what is stopping you?
The (wrong and silly) assumption that everyone must use Google/Apple phones is expected from Big Tech these days but you are supposed to be among the good guys. Please help us be free from Google/Apple 🙂
Note, that not everyone limits the use of the term #fediverse to the AP protocol. Many apply it to AP, Diaspora, Matrix, #XMPP, etc. After all, communication between the "sub-federations" is possible.
#YunoHost devs are testing#Prosody as #xmpp#jabber replacement for metronome to get better integration with the system and better compliance with jabber standards. Also new default features as A/V calls.
Hmm, after having #nextcloud run on my #rpi for a bit I noticed I really don't need it. (Because the video chat just doesnt work as it should).
Maybe I'll just reset the rpi again and focus on some leaner system.
Maybe I'll try with #xmpp this time. Have to check if that has good voice and screenshare options right now. And maybe a web interface.
I haven't really done anything with that for a decade.
An important distinction is slowly being uncovered about the definition of the term "fediverse." Who is it that gets to decide what this place is? How are we being represented? These are not easy questions to answer and if we don't do a better job describing ourselves, then the job will get done for us by people who don't understand the underlying values we hold. #fediverse#meta#threads
@liaizon Personally, and the way the term was used, since it was first coined, was any software with #OStatus support (later #ActivityPub).
When there were discussions of having a new name, I ran suggestion threads and polls about it, and one suggestion/choice was mycelial, mycelium. I like it so I started using it myself.
