I like @Mastodon, however I am also flirting with the #XMPP could-have-been, @movim as a platform to discover. If only #Movim had proper #ActivityPub compatibility.
My current AV grant is consuming all my time, making it challenging to progress on other topics.
Feel free to work on microblogging XEPs: as long as they're compatible with #Movim and #Libervia - it will with the gateway, at least for body. Reactions and likes require XEP-0470, not yet implemented in Movim.
AP DMs are converted to #XMPP chat messages, so they should work with Converse and other clients out of the box.
Hmm, after having #nextcloud run on my #rpi for a bit I noticed I really don't need it. (Because the video chat just doesnt work as it should).
Maybe I'll just reset the rpi again and focus on some leaner system.
Maybe I'll try with #xmpp this time. Have to check if that has good voice and screenshare options right now. And maybe a web interface.
I haven't really done anything with that for a decade.
I think at this point it's worth thinking about why we need text chats and voice/video calls integrated with each other like what #XMPP (try to), #Matrix, and #Discord do
Why not just go back to #IRC or something like #AIM for text, and something like #Skype for calls like the old days :sagume_think:
File exchange in #XMPP nowadays is either HTTP upload (covered by #OMEMO) or #jingle file transfer, which should be e2e encrypted, too, but I'm not sure about it.
➡️ Movim is a free and open source social platform and chat software, built on the XMPP protocol.
➡️ It is a complete communication solution that allows us to chat, create groups and communities, compose and share posts, news and even audio and video calls.
My issues with #xmpp, and why I still currently prefer #matrix:
It's XML everywhere
The session-management system is inferior to what matrix has with session ids and security keys
The closest you can get to a web client is ConverseJS, which is really underwhelming, especially since it uses bootstrap (the css framework) and doesn't even support dark theme :(
XMPP has already fallen of a cliff in terms of popularity, and it's only getting worse, meanwhile matrix is thriving.
The federation model of #ActivityPub is based on random chance. Yes, being on a larger instance increases your chances that you can see all replies in a thread but it doesn’t guarantee it.
I've seen this on four social networks in the #Fediverse now in just over a week - #ActivityPub, #ZOT, #nostr, and #Movim/XMPP. These memes are going around, but what about those privacy disrespecting, deprecated legacy silos like #Faceplant, #Twitter, and #InstaSPAM or #Reddit - Why is it that we're preaching to the choir instead of to the sinners of the #SunnyVale_Syndrome?
Go forth, save those poor souls over on the silos, Tell them that they're pork bellies. Muahahaha!
I keep returning to the idea of running a #matrix server attached to mastodon.radio
We have an #xmpp server already, but I don't think it gets much use and not many projects host discussions on xmpp these days, and many use matrix so it feels like matrix would be more useful.
However, it is more resource intensive, I'd probably need to spin up a new vps dedicated to running the #synapse matrix server, and I don't want to use donations wastefully. Plus more admin overhead.
Has anybody tried using Libervia as a bridge between XMPP and ActivityPub? I'm thinking about giving it a try so I can following people on the ActivityPub side from my Movim instance. It doesn't look all that straight forward to setup, though, so it's probably going to be a big time sink as I troubleshoot it while setting it up.
Because of the recent events on #Habitica I've created a #Liberapay page to get some support to fix what will happen on August 8th.
My plan is to create an advanced chat for the uotpify.org community (~5,000 people) and to keep providing high quality challenges on Habitica. More information on the Liberapay page: https://liberapay.com/utopify.org
This will be a lot of work and I hope for some #support
I provide challenges for about 6 years on Habitica for free, but it took a lot of time to write programs automating a lot of work (anti-cheat), scanning the chat for challenge participants, processing challenge data and creating high score lists, announcing new challenges, winners of challenges, etc. Now, that chats and guilds will be removed on Habitica, there will be even more work and the motivation is not really high, if a company destroys it within a week what you built up over several years.
Liberapay was the only solution I found, which is #foss and fits the values for what utopify stands for. If you know others/better, please name them.
I appreciate every Cent and thank you for your support 🙏
My problem with money donations are always, that not trustworthy companies have to be used. Currently I use #paypal, but #stripe is supported by Liberapay, too.
Is it necessary to have a Stripe account or is PayPal enough? Because reading the privacy policy of them makes me a little bit dizzy and if it can be avoided, I really want to avoid it. But if people will say, they want to donate, but only with Stripe, I would create a Stripe account.
@utopify_org have you already decided what chat system to use? I am in advanced stages of integrating #xmpp accounts with #lemmy and plan to host a https://movim.eu#movim client along side our https://slrpnk.net Lemmy instance. I would be happy to help out with setting that up if XMPP is an option for you as well.
I fell in love with XMPP (again). Long time I have not been using it, but it has developed great. Gajim has become a beautiful client and I just wish more users would join. For SpaceFun, I have created a little Room, so feel free to try and join me there. Just Click on + Start Chat in Gajim and enter spacefun@conference.trashserver.net
Have you tested the XMPP social media apps, Movim and Libervia? The latter is in the process of developing a bridge to the ActivityPub network, and is looking for beta testers willing to stand up XMPP servers:
#FediHelp#AskFedi: I'm looking to set up some sort of chat/file-share/conferencing instance for my family, about 15 people. These are mostly non-tech people on iPhone and Android.
I have an Apache website on 1and1.com but don't have Docker experience and would prefer something relatively easy to set up on a subdomain or new extension (like .chat), with encrypted messaging options.
I've found a lot of different options, like #Movim & #Matrix, but it's been challenging to figure out what would work best. Where's a good forum to have this kind of discovery discussion?
So are #SSB, #NNTP and #ActivityPub the main #social protocols to keep an eye on right now or are others also pretty active and/or with interesting features?
In this version you will be able to configure the privacy level of your blog post, interact with your chat messages in one click (or tap 📱!) and explore our refreshed interface (with lots of small surprises) 😋
The fediverse (a portmanteau of "federation" and "universe") is an ensemble of federated (i.e. interconnected) servers that are used for web publishing (i.e. social networking, microblogging, blogging, or websites) and file hosting, which, while independently hosted, can communicate with each other. On different servers (technically instances)...
