We’re excited to announce that we’re supporting #ActivityPub Test Suite and investing in the establishment of developer tools to ensure compatibility among ActivityPub implementations. This #interoperability also benefits users and will lead to individuals having more control over their data.
#Enshittification isn't inevitable: under different conditions and constraints, the old, good internet could have given way to a new, good internet. Enshittification is the result of specific policy choices: encouraging monopolies; enabling high-speed, digital shell games; and blocking #interoperability.

A Murder Story: Whatever Happened to Interoperability? The eminent Cory Doctorow, @pluralistic, accurately reveals the murder of #interoperability by tech giants in this new post. Long, but totally worth a read. Here’s a sample: “Interoperability wasn’t killed by the reverse-engineer-proof computer nor by the lack of market demand for aftermarket modifications. I don't like the use of the word "fight" here, but this is a good overview of the issues and what's at stake.
Money quote: "Soon, Meta’s Threads app plans to become interoperable with ActivityPub networks like Mastodon. Flipboard and #Automattic, owner of #WordPressDotCom and #tumblr are also betting on ActivityPub."
Over the last year, the discussion of #DMA rules for inteoperability largely felt like doubtful whether this would really happen. And the conversation focused on potential challenges to make messaging that's both interoperable and secure.
It's good to see that - if all goes well - interoperable messaging will become a reality.
And even more importantly, that European regulation works and does shape markets.

Very worthwhile read on the fallacy, yes fallacy of "if you're not paying, you are the product".
@pluralistic argues that this implies you have some power from paying because you can stop.
But the reality is different: if you are locked in you won't stop so your payments have no leverage. So we can't make companies behave by paying for services.
The key is freedom from lock in, #interoperability and #privacy. That's what would help, not being able to pay for privacy.

I just finished "Protocols, Not Platforms" by @mmasnick. Great read. Interoperability is key to the future of social media, as it was (and still is) to the Internet and many other technologies.
