#Bloomscrolling from sunset #hiking at Dog Mountain a few days ago. The hills are alive with the sound of balsam root jumping around! Mainly because it was pretty windy! Also around were paintbrush here and there, lots of cow-parsnip(?) and occasional chocolate lily! Seems like the lupines are finished for the season.

Bright yellow sunflower-like balsam root in the lower foreground, a bunch of long stalked white cow-parsnip(?), and trees in the background with blue sky visible through the branches.
A single tree that seems to be dancing in a field of blossoming balsomroot under a blue sky.
Chocolate Lily, aka checker lily, aka Fritillaria affinis. Small flowers that have a kind of mottled texture of dark red with yellow sprinkles.

A solitary balloon drifting over forest where very very few people ever go. This seriously spooked me, as there is no reason for anyone to be there, let alone with a balloon. For context, this is 7km into a river valley you can only reach by #hiking or #cycling, or potentially another 5km from the workers at a dam. (old photo) #weird #pnw #forest #scary

More travel photos.. I had a plan to do some around for a few days, and when I got there, it proceeded to rain with thunder for most of the time I was there! There was however one clear morning and one clear afternoon, so I did get a little hiking in.. Stretch number one was taking their cable car up to the Fort de la Bastille, and hike some trails behind it. A bonus was a long rocky tunnel (Grotte de Mandrin) which from the outside had a questionable wood plank walkway above.

Some old ruins of previous fortifications near the Fort de la Bastille, with Grenoble in the background below, and mountains under partly cloudy skies beyond.
The view from above the Fort de la Bastille, which from this side just looks like a forested mound, with a really wide view of Grenoble and mountains beyond.
Outside the Grotte de Mandrin, with big windows carved through the rock, and a "walkway" above the windows made of wire and thin wood planks spaced pretty widely.

Hey friends!

The weather forecast today was "a lot of rain". In the morning it had changed to "rain from 3pm".so we decided to do a small hike on the local .

In the photos you see a couple of impressions from our 3h activity. It was really the best decision to go out.
We just returned, had a coffee are relaxing on the couch and the rain and thunder just started rolling over us.

Well. I hope you enjoy your day as well!

A serene scene of a log cabin nestled in the lush green woods is captured in this image. The cabin is surrounded by tall trees, a carpet of vibrant green grass, and a clear blue sky above. The cabin itself is a charming wooden structure with a chimney, blending seamlessly into its natural surroundings. The peaceful rural setting evokes a sense of tranquility and simplicity. The image conveys a feeling of rustic beauty and seclusion, inviting viewers to imagine a quiet retreat in the heart of nature.
A picturesque scene featuring a building with a white exterior surrounded by a lush green lawn. The lawn is dotted with blue umbrellas, adding a pop of color to the serene setting. In the background, a clear blue sky with fluffy white clouds can be seen. A tree stands tall on the right side of the image, adding to the natural beauty of the landscape. The building has a balcony and large windows, giving it a charming and inviting appearance. The overall atmosphere is peaceful and inviting, perfect for a relaxing afternoon outdoors.
A black bench is positioned in the center of a vast grassy field, surrounded by a backdrop of lush greenery. The grass is neatly trimmed, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. The bench is made of wood and appears to be weathered but well-maintained. There are no people in the scene, allowing for a peaceful and solitary experience. In the distance, there are trees and a fence visible, adding to the natural beauty of the landscape. The overall setting exudes tranquility and a sense of connection with nature.

On Memorial Day, I took a day off from the garden to visit one of the most famous spots in the Cascade range (Washington State) for plant geeks. It's called Perry Creek, about 90 minutes NE of Seattle. A unique coincidence of topography and weather patterns allows about 250 species of native plants to thrive in a small valley. It has a special protected status under the National Forest Service. A meandering plant photo thread.

Mountain valley, cloudy misty day. A pyramidal peak, snow capped, dominates the horizon. Wooded slopes frame either side of the picture and a trail leads through very mossy rocks into the distance towards the peak.
Trail leading beneath maple trees off into the distance toward the mountain. Moss hangs in curtains from maple branches and more moss blankets the stones I. Either side of the trail. Dappled afternoon sunlight peeks through the trees.

Perry Creek plant safari cont'd. Now for some plants I can't identify....Photo 1 & 2: this is obviously a fern but as it's barely unfurling I can't tell which. Lovely nonetheless. Lady fern perhaps? Photos 3 & 4: This flower is a real stumper. Notice the variegated foliage. At first I thought it was foam flower but that little yellow flower is not right for that. Anyone recognize it?

A second view of the same plants.
A very small plant on the forest floor. The foliage is deeply dissected and variegated with a dark pattern splashed across the basal area of each leaf.
A second view of the same plant with a very tiny yellow flower in the center. It is shaped like a star.
