Expanding palm oil plantations are encroaching on the land of Indigenous people in Borneo. Communities in Malaysia and around the world are using mapping technologies like GPS, GIS (Geographic Information System) and drone photography to rightfully claim what's theirs, and by doing so safeguarding their homes and cultural identity. @restofworld investigates:
Encountered a new W3W limitation this weekend: Accented characters.
The person reading me the code knew it wasn't English, but either didn't know the accents mattered or hadn't been given them themselves.
It turns out the website will do fuzzy matching and compensate for that - the mobile app did not.
And (accented characters aside) most of the claimed advantages definitely go away when you have to resort to the phonetic alphabet to pass the details.
The r/OpenStreetMap subreddit is temporarily closing for a few days, as part of the site wide protest against the proposed new reddit changes which would adversely affect the community there.
OpenStreetMap is one of the most open projects. Nearly everyone can contribute to it. Nearly everyone has something new to edit, to change. The whole point is that everyone can edit the map. That's how we change the world, by editing the map, again and again.
A different version of the map I submitted to the 2023 GISCI Mapping Contest (I haven't posted it yet). I like the tall version, but it didn't fit the page size requirements for the contest. This is similar to my grad school map, except I converted the counties into hexagons, and the years are sorted from warmest to coolest. I also set the mean anomalies to transparent (which was a total pita).
Speaking of #cat islands... this other #island is a most appealing shaped island. I think it looks like a fat cat. I'm surprised no one else has pointed out this island exists (well... no one else in the modern Internet). #gis#mapping 28.83205, 129.00025
Please read the “Map tips” (link in upper left corner) so you do not misinterpret the satellite heat detection data.
In addition to the GIS layers that are ‘on’ when the map opens there are other overlay layers you can turn on/off/restack. Need help with that? Please read the “Map tips”.
You can pan the map to the large fire to the southwest in the Port Clyde area. #Tantallon#Halifax
The {ggautomap} #rstats 📦 “provides #ggplot2 geometries that make use of cartographer, a framework for matching place names with map data. With ggautomap your input dataset doesn’t need to be spatially aware: The geometries will automatically attach the map data (providing it’s been registered with cartographer).” https://cidm-ph.github.io/ggautomap/index.html

Just launched gis.chat (https://gis.chat/), a chat platform for our geospatial community. It's open-source, free and geo-first! Let me know what you think and be part of it :) #gis#eo#gischat#zulip
Here’s a thought experiment: If you had a small group of skilled mobile, desktop, server, and web front-end engineers who have access to time and money, and are eager to MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE USING THEIR SKILLS (and not just spin up yet another exploitive startup) what would YOU have them do?
Be specific.
Assume cost is no object.
It’s time to stop bellyaching about how bad tech is, and start brainstorming about what good it can do.
Please repost for exposure.
EDIT: Let’s add hardware, industrial design, and UX engineers in the mix as well, to round things out.
