"The Italian oil major Eni is facing the country’s first climate lawsuit, with environmental groups alleging the company used “lobbying and greenwashing” to push for more fossil fuels despite having known about the risks its product posed since 1970."
Finance is a major driver of the climate crisis...

New research found that funds branced as "socially responsible" invested more than $1.5bn in coal, oil and gas companies. Report authors said:
“This is a feature rather than a bug from the ESG logic, which is concerned less with driving real material change in the economy, including decarbonisation, and instead is focused on managing financial risk and reducing financial impacts.”
Absolutely inexcusable - "‘Mind-boggling’ #methane#emissions from #Turkmenistan revealed - Leaks of potent greenhouse gas #GHG could be easily fixed, say experts, and would rapidly reduce global heating - Methane leaks alone from Turkmenistan’s two main fossil fuel fields caused more global heating in 2022 than the entire carbon emissions of the UK, satellite data has revealed.
Methane emissions have surged alarmingly since 2007 and this acceleration may be the biggest threat to keeping below 1.5C of global heating, according to scientists. It also seriously risks triggering catastrophic climate tipping points, researchers say.
Emissions of the potent greenhouse gas from the oil- and gas-rich country are “mind-boggling”, and an “infuriating” problem that should be easy to fix, experts have told the Guardian.
The data produced by Kayrros for the #Guardian found that the western fossil fuel field in Turkmenistan, on the #Caspian coast, leaked 2.6m tonnes of methane in 2022. The eastern field emitted 1.8m tonnes. Together, the two fields released emissions equivalent to 366m tonnes of #CO2, more than the UK’s annual emissions, which are the 17th-biggest in the world."
You know that thing where stuff keeps going down the drain, and everything seems fine until the drain starts to slow, and finally is completely clogged? That's what we're doing to Earth. We forget about stuff we throw out or emit, but it doesn’t disappear — it's just gone somewhere else. Adults are supposed to have object permanence.
@rahmstorf More accurate: "Our activities have led to this amount of extra heat in the Earth system", as the amount of energy released by burning #FossilFuels itself is dwarfed by it's effect on preventing heat from leaving the planet. The article explains it well. Still, how does the #warming effect of our #CO2 emissions compare to that of additional release of methane due to our activities? How big is the contribution due to land use change (e.g. deforestation, peatland farming) in comparison?
Steven Milloy, a right wing commentator and activist has put forth a shareholder proposal for Chevron's annual meeting to rescind a nonbinding shareholder resolution from 2 years ago aiming to reduce scope 3 emissions. #ESG#FossilFuels
Planting trees is useful, but will never compensate for burning #FossilFuels, which can never be stocked again so densely at our human timescale.
We need to stop extracting fossil fuels, period. #CarbonOffets cannot counterbalance.
Another thought for the Can't-Be-Bothered candidates in our #localelections2023, Skircoat Green Halifax is that whatever your respective Party Offices are churning out about Green Initiatives, my figures say that it just ain't true. Please tell me when this will be addressed and the hopefully fixed? #greenwashing#ClimateCrisis#powergeneration#fossilfuels
