Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have led a study that identified a new species of aetosaur, a type of ancient crocodile, who lived before the emergence of dinosaurs. The newly discovered species is called Garzapelta muelleri, and the scientists have managed to piece together fossil fragments to reconstruct a remarkable 70% of its fossilized dorsal carapace. “Usually, you find very limited material,” one scientist says. Today volunteer @WitcherClo is arranging an ichthyosaur in our fossil collection. There's a lot of tiny fragments for such a large skeleton, but enough is preserved to see the animal start to take shape.
:gnomeHey:
Canadian banks are leaders in funding fossil fuel expansion, report.
"global analysis on fossil fuel banking. Endorsed by 624 organizations from 75 countries, it reveals the truth of banks’ commitments to the climate by examining their financing of the #fossil fuel industry.
For the first time since 2019, a Canadian bank is the #1 annual financier of fossil fuels rather than US bank JP Morgan Chase. Royal Bank of #Canada (#RBC) showered fossil fuel projects with $41 billion dollars in 2022, including $4.8 billion for #tar sands and $7.4 billion into fracking. Canadian banks are becoming the banks of last resort for fossil fuels, providing $862 billion to fossil fuel companies since the Paris Agreement."

This one I would rate as medium. This is a ceratopsian is a juvenile representative of its species, and might be dubious as a result.

Here's a Pappocetus lugardi while I'm at it. For reference I looked at some Pappocetus specimens from Gueran in the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra Region of Morocco and the drawings in the description by Charles William Andrews.
Nuclear safety in spotlight as French start-ups bring mini reactors to market
France wants to take the lead in rolling out safer, cleaner #nuclear#energy as an alternative to #fossil#fuels – but the growing number of start-ups promising to #decarbonise the #industry with small reactors is raising questions about safety and #environmental responsibility.
This one I would rate as easy. This is a ceratopsian is one of the most well known and beloved of all ceratopsians.

Update:
Some very interesting replies to this question
Kid asked very good question this morning: why is this fossil ammonite in a round concretion? As in how was it preserved? (I explained that in some locations you find roundish stones that when broken in half reveal a fossil ammonite or other fossil inside). But why do they form in these roundish shapes? What is the preservation method.
I no longer remember where this came from but I think, Whitby?
X-ray microscopy of fossil parasitoid wasps to study the evolution of echolocation for finding hosts:
"†Kryptovelona carstengroehni gen. et sp. nov. and †Orussus juttagroehnae sp. nov. are the first female members of the parasitoid wasp family Orussidae recorded from Baltic amber. We describe them, including relevant parts of the internal anatomy examined with synchrotron scanning. The fossils display a number of modifications in the antennae and foreleg correlated with the specialized host-detection mechanism, and in the ovipositor apparatus, as well as in the thorax and abdomen for accommodating the internalized ovipositor."
"By comparing the new Baltic amber taxa with †Cretorussus, it is possible to trace the progressive refinement of the echolocation mechanism through reductions in the number of antennomeres and foreleg tarsomeres."
A #paleoart Temnodontosaurus suplex for #FossilFriday. Temnodontosaurus are very familiar ichthyosaurs to many of us and this might overshadow how remarkable they were. Among the last of the large/giant ichthyosaurs, they were top predators in early Jurassic seas. #sciart#fossil
Today is #FossilFriday & I got a reminder that last year this day my humans made #trilobite#cookies. It was for a colleague's #Phd defence pawty in the #geophysics department. The cookies were a huge success 😻😹
This one I would rate as easy. This is a #Canadian ceratopsian on the larger end of the ceratopsian scale..

This is based on the original set Triceratops, modified by me into something else
Guidraco venator (gway-dray-koh ven-ate-or) was an #anhanguerid#pterosaur from the early Cretaceous of China. Its name refers to the Chinese term “gui”, meaning “ghost”, and the Latin word “draco” meaning “dragon”. Its specific name is the Latin word for “hunter”.

I need to give #fossil a try but I'm having an absurd amount of difficulty figuring out how to set up a centralized server via #docker to fit in my current setup. The instructions on the fossil website seem to be incomplete. #foss#linux
I spent Thursday in the paleo lab prepping this mammoth mandible. It's sitting on the bench bottom side up. Images 2 and 3 show the teeth. Image 4 is just a few of the random fragments I need to place.
I convinced my boss to set up @forgejo and evaluate it. We are very unhappy with #GitLab and the current path we see. I already use forgejo for my private git. But a company has other needs, e.g. the actions and PRs.
I'm looking forward to see the outcome and hopefully switch to something better.
