Hmm, I wonder if there's ever been an elephant in Ojai, California. Interesting statement, but wondering if it has any practical impact on the city. (from earlier this month: "By a 4-1 vote, Ojai City Council adopted the first ordinance in the nation that grants bodily autonomy — or habeas corpus rights — to elephants. This means that, legally, elephants cannot be imprisoned against their will inside city limits.") #elephants #ojai #habeuscorpus #animals https://www.ojaivalleynews.com/news/government/elephants-get-bodily-liberty-in-ojai/article_a0028508-5e72-11ee-ae0b-47cbbffa8472.html#:%7e:text=By%20a%204%2D1%20vote,their%20will%20inside%20city%20limits.

It's kinda corny, but we love posting stories about elephants on Mastodon! 🐘🦣

Scientists and a team of volunteers recently uncovered a large prehistoric elephant graveyard in Florida.

Popular Science reports on the "once-in-a-lifetime" find: https://www.popsci.com/environment/florida-elephant-graveyard-fossils/

"Elephants returning to a matriarchal group are greeted with ceremonial embraces, entwinings of trunks and colossal snorts of pleasure. Coming across the bones of their dead, they will salute them, lightly touching the skulls and tusks with their trunks. They have been known to bury dead family members, covering them in earth and brightly coloured leaves, working together, surrounding the corpse with fruit and flowers."

Some good news coming out of Canada for #elephants and great apes! The Canadian government is introducing a bill to phase them out of captivity!

This means zoos and private owners would be banned from acquiring new ones or breeding existing ones.

Why is this a big deal? Elephants and great apes (which includes #chimpanzees, #gorillas, #orangutans, and #bonobos) are highly intelligent and social beings with complex natural habitats. Studies have shown that these animals suffer both physically and mentally in captivity, and often develop serious behavioural and health problems due to the stress of confinement.

There are around 30 great apes held in captivity in Canada and over 20 captive elephants. Many of these animals were captured from their homes in the wild before being caged for human entertainment.

Vegan Australia welcomes this news from Canada, and we hope this will inspire the Australian government, and Australian zoos, to embrace similar measures and end the exploitation of all animals. Currently Australia is keeping 27 elephants, and approximately 60 great apes in captivity.

#Hindu #myths from #ancient #India can still serve as parables today. Here are two I recall about #elephants:

  1. Three blind men touch an elephant in three different places, such as a leg, trunk, or tusk. Each therefore reaches a very different conclusion (e.g., it's a tree) as to what the phenomenon is.

Interpretation: We cannot very well see things or people as a whole. Even the perspectives in #academia come from different disciplines. Different people looking at a multifaceted individual can each draw a very different image of the person.

  1. Three animals cross a river, and each reaches the other shore. The rabbit swims along the surface, the horse occasionally hits bottom, but the elephant touches bottom all the way.

Interpretation: This is a parable of enlightenment or individual differences in wisdom. People can only understand things to their own depth. They might therefore avoid a person who is too heavy like the elephant. Just sayin"!

Wifey is playing Super Mario Wonder now, since last night, just kinda chilling and playing semi-slow. She's in world 2 and the game looks AWESOME. Definitely lots of co-op potential too, you can even play as different colored Yoshis or Nabbit (when you play as those, you don't get hurt unless you fall off a cliff, but you can't use powerups).

REALLY great looking game. Her theory is that it was originally a Kirby game and they skinned it Mario. It's very Kirby-like in some aspects. Which is never a bad thing!

Oh, and I love elephant Peach! 😍

From Super Mario Wonder, Peach transformed into an elephant via a powerup. She's running down a platform in an ice level, it says 'good' around her with an explosive looking graphic, and there's a coin in front of her.

Did you know that according to Pliny, rhinos are the main enemy of #elephants?

King Manuel I of #Portugal wanted to test the theory. In 1514, he pitted a #rhino gifted to him by the governor of Portuguese #India (who had in turn been gifted it by Sultan Muzafar II of Gujarat), against an Indian elephant named Hanno.

Hanno, upon seeing the rhino, promptly fled.

First Hanno & later the rhino were sent to #Pope Leo X, but the ship carrying the latter sank before it reached Rome.

Researchers decode how elephants form "sentences," lending insight to their complex communication (www.salon.com)

African savannah elephants (Loxodonta africana) are the world's largest living land-based animals, reaching a height between 10 and 13 feet (roughly 3 to 4 meters) and weighing between 4 to 7 tons. One in particular, Doma, is the most dominant male in his group. Yet he seems to have developed this superiority as much through...

This story must be told

In November 2023, one of the tragic casualties of severe heat exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon was an elephant in Zimbabwe's largest animal reserve. Hwange National Park, boasting over 45,000 elephants, witnessed the deaths of over 100 of these majestic creatures due to dehydration.
