Currently uploading vids of me confronting #Saanich cops & watching their #WalkOfShame off our property when I fully called their #antimasker#asshats too. Fuck these assholes.
Attention #Seattle folks! There’s a rally and march today at 5PM to protest police officer Kevin Dave killing Jaahnavi Kandula on Jan 23 with so far no consequences. Worse we’ve since learned of the body cam footage of just awful attitudes from police union leaders. Event starts at Dexter & Thomas.
Womp womp. The powerful never face consequences. The city paid millions for Mayor Durkan’s and other executives’ illegal actions in deleting text messages. But Durkan, Best and others won’t face prosecution for breaking the law.
The recent the mass shooting in Ottawa was not home-grown. The intended target, a member of a Toronto-area gang who was not among the dead, was attending a family wedding.
I'm not saying "blame Toronto" here, we do have gangs and gun violence in Ottawa. It's just that not being not being on the US border or having a port means not having as many firearms on our streets. Here it's mostly targeted stabbings.
Gangs predominantly feed off street kids. Street life is rough for a minor. Violence is real and constant, and the kids follow the schoolyard rule of 'snitches get stitches.' They join gangs because society has nothing to offer, whereas gang life gives protection, shelter, community, food and money. They start as messengers and runners, largely immune from legal consequences, then rise through the ranks, perpetuating the cycle.
So what to make of Sutcliffe riding on the tails of this rare tragedy, to call for an increase to the police budget while starving social spending through limits on taxation?
How are police even relevant to this conversation? Would more police have spared that wedding? Prevent kids from being lured into gangs? Given them better opportunities? Stable shelter? Education? Safety? It's delusional.
The actual solutions lie in social programs not jackboots.
#CorpoDems are just as fascist as the GOP, they have the same masters. They prove this all the time but most outrageously this week w/ 60+ RICO charges for attending a concert that protests #StopCopCity or handing out flyers, or raising bail funds. They are really showing they are willing to shut down any opposition from the people once the corporations have made up their minds. They want all these cops to kill the protestors for #ClimateCrisis & migrants from said crisis https://youtu.be/ib8wFdj-Q2c?si=D9vAqfmUOirXzq_x
Something I find missing in the #DefundThePolice discussion (terrible name for the movement, I must say once again) is that the police provides one service that I find difficult to replace: investigative power.
The work that detectives do in conjunction with the DA’s office to investigate crime, especially organized or “ad-hoc organized” crime like catalytic converter theft rings or neighborhood-looting flash mobs, is valuable. They infiltrate and break up organizations, which can often fix systemic problems in neighborhoods where these crime rings operate.
While I’m 100% for putting resources into social good rather than more cops, I find myself wondering where investigative power should lie. Should criminal investigations be placed entirely under a DA’s office, and should we separate investigative police from “regular” police?
The fact that 'race' is a social construct w zero basis in fact/science does NOT mean that it has zero impact. We can stop talking about race when being the 'wrong one' stops killing people & when supposedly 'color-blind' policies stop bulwarking #WhiteSupremacy & #MedicalRacism
"You have the fight against environmental defense. You have the fight for racial equality. You have the fight against capitalism. And of course, you have the fight against police militarization or the fight for police abolition," said Matt Scott, a journalist w. the Atlanta Community Press Collective
