If you use on cloud, amazon-ec2-utils is headed your way with some helpful udev rules and tools.

Now you can manage block devices using the same "sdX" conventions used in the AWS console and API. 😉

It's on the way to for users, too! 🥳

Remember guys: hosting in the cloud doesn’t mean you don’t need backups: always have backups that are stored with an independent third party!

In which I notice that AWS’s S3 is getting more and more competition all the time, and thus the object-storage space is becoming interesting, and also that there’s a angle: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2024/05/05/On-Storage

Hey people,

Did you use a cloud backup provider/storage?

If yes, witch one?

Thanks.

Users completely underestimate how risky the use of storage is, which is very frustrating. But to be fair, the corporations don't really warn them.

I'm not saying storage can never be used, but if you have to use it, there are some rules:

▶️ Assume everything will be nuked tomorrow
▶️ Assume the state is watching your activity
▶️ It must not be your primary storage. You must have at least 1 full copy on devices you control
▶️ All files in cloud storage are basically public

It's not just Google, of course. When you trust your data to ANY #cloud service, you can get rugpulled at any moment without warning. Remember, they have the de-facto control over the data, and you don't.

What “hybrid cloud” actually means to us. Where it works well, where it creates challenges, where the control plane should live, how to abstract differences between platforms to make workloads more suitable to be used in a hybrid setup, maintaining compliance across clouds, and guarding against security vulnerabilities in containerised dependencies.

I'm a Docker (or containers in general) non-believer. I simply don't believe in the promises it makes.

Docker is supposed to be easy to set up, easy to update, easy to migrate and always works. However, I've head plenty of stories where a container setup doesn't want to work, doesn't want to update or doesn't work after migrating. It's the same shit.

I'll stick to plain old system packages and there is absolutely nothing that will stop me.
