Back in November 2023, I wrote about the looming backlash in environmental politics in the EU for Yale E360. Now the Union and its parties are entering the decisive phase of this struggle, both with the ongoing elections, which will result in a new parliament and commission, and with the imminent decision of the Council of member states about the #NatureRestorationLawhttps://e360.yale.edu/features/europe-environment-backlash#EU#Euelection#Europe#climate
Scientists have mapped one of the most hazardous spots on the globe in unprecedented detail: a 600-mile geologic boundary just off the #PacificNorthwest coast.
Along this fraught stretch, called the #CascadiaSubductionZone, 2 pieces of the #Earth’s crust slide against each other, building up stresses capable of unleashing a catastrophic 9.0-magnitude #earthquake & generating a #tsunami, w/waves as high as 40 feet.
AP News calling environmental protestors "oil supporters". It's no wonder the world is the way it is, if these are kind of news platforms that keep us "informed" about issues #climate#protest#UK#news#media

Big social media company trumpeting that augment reality helps sustainability... because consumers using AR are "increasing their purchases" of products.
(technology which increases consumption is not helping with sustainability, folks)
"Almost four out of every 10 #journalists covering the #climate crisis and environment issues have been threatened as a result of their work, with 11% subjected to physical violence, according to groundbreaking new research.
Despite the breadth and magnitude of the problems, 39% of journalists surveyed reported having #SelfCensored – mostly due to fear of repercussions from “those undertaking illegal activities” or the government."
‘Godfathers of climate chaos’: UN chief urges global fossil-fuel advertising ban
"António Guterres called on news and tech media to stop enabling “planetary destruction” by taking #FossilFuelAdvertising money while warning the world faces “#climate crunch time” in its faltering attempts to stem the crisis."
Anti-camping ordinances and sweeps are pushing unhoused people into increasingly marginal spaces, exposed to extreme weather.
Officials in cities like Ontario, #California, can be hostile, by, for example, removing park gazebos.
But CA is prone to cycles of drought and heavy rainfall. And when the rain hits, like it did in Nov. 2022, it can be fatal to people living around culverts and drainage.
LA Times: Earth breaks heat and CO2 records once again: ‘Our planet is trying to tell us something’
"...Humanity is ignoring major planetary vital signs as atmospheric carbon dioxide levels soar to all-time highs and Earth records its 12th consecutive month of record-breaking heat, international climate officials warned this week...."
St. Paul schools turn towards geothermal energy as Minnesota‘s climate shifts
And if students are uncomfortable, it’s difficult to focus on learning. A high school on the East Side of Saint Paul is wrapping up its first year with a new heating and cooling system that draws energy from the ground
Like most innovative IDUs, #geothermal as an energy source, will get cheaper.
In Mar, J Shah, DIR: Energy Dept’s Loan Project Office: $25B in investment over the next 5 yrs <cost of the last nuclear plant to be built -could begin a rolling snowball of funding that could power b/w 80-260M HHs by midcentury with clean, reliable power.
Next gen. of geothermal: currently in its infancy -first few projects will be expensive & high-risk as the IDU gets-.
This is interesting, glad the price is coming down, let's hope the plants to de-CO2 run off of renewables so it is at least carbon neutral to remove CO2 from the air.
EVs & hybrids are good for #climate. Ford's EV & hybrid sales are up, which is a good sign that many Americans care about mitigating the #climatecrisis.
How come #NigelFarage gets to turn up out of nowhere and decree that this is now “the immigration election”‽
Ordinary voter here, and I don’t give a tinker’s toss about #immigration. I’d much prefer this to be “the climate change election”, please. If you agree, give this a RT. ♻️
In 2021 after my dad died and I took over my portion of his remaining 401k, I saw that it was entirely invested in big oil. I immediately moved the money out of fossil fuels. While you can't control what's in certain mutual or lifecycle funds, if you do have the opportunity to divest from fossil fuels please do so. And if possible through your employer's 401k offerings, look for "fossil free" funds. They do exist. Here's one place to search: https://fossilfreefunds.org/funds#climate
Climate solution: Massachusetts town experiments with #CommunityHeating and cooling
"The neighborhood will be part of a pilot #climate solution that connects 37 homes and businesses with a highly-efficient, underground heating and cooling system.
Other networked geothermal projects exist in the U.S., including the Texas community of Whisper Valley and Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Eversource says this is the first utility-led installation in the U.S."
