Emma, by Jane Austen.
You are but one and twenty, a gentleman’s daughter, but fixed on never marrying so that you may care for your hypochondriac father; this, however, does not dissuade you from the disastrous matchmaking you attempt for others, which goes wildly awry, embroiling yourself even, though you are always sensible to the distinction of rank.

The ever readable Kenan Malik joins the dots between exploitation of seafarers by P&O, globalisation & the success of Dubai (built on more exploitation of workers), to (rightly, to my mind) to re-emphasise that this all looks pretty much like the economics of class.

Call it what you will; global capitalism, corporate capitalism, neoliberalism, etc.

in the end the political economy of class relations never went away, it was just obscured.

It seems to me, slowly but surely, class is returning to the political debate - and about time.

I never bought the claims about post-class politics... indeed, when people talked about intersectionaility, I always wanted to include class as one of the key identities (and lived experiences) that formed part of our political economic existence.

Now, driven by an ever clearer class politics of the Tories, class as a political category seems to be reviving & that is a good thing!

Are the attacks on Anglea Rayner driven by snobbery, or to be clearer; classism?

Well when we compare her political treatment & the DWP's now toxic position on unpaid carers, with the lightness of touch when dealing with the wealthy (either in politics or when found to have broken tax-related laws), I think we can safely say that distinctions of class as drivers for public/official attitudes are ver much alive & kicking!

How much does class impact on your earning potential in the professions?

The simple answer is that if you're form a working-class background you are going to be paid around 12% less than you colleagues from middle-class or with parents in the professions already.

Although a small number of employers recognise the problem & are collecting data with a view to shape promotion/hiring policies.... mostly inaction & ignorance is the picture

I’m beginning to get the distinct impression that leftists who care about the environment enough to do actually get off their ass and do something about it are a miniscule minority.

Most seem more interested in virtue signaling their love for humanity while we fill our nest so full of shit our children drown in a boiling vat of it.

And honestly, I think the IDPOL cancel culture just has a lot of people too scared to speak out for fear of being labeled an eco-fascist.

It’s crazy.

There won’t be any people to love in a decade or two if we don’t get our environmental shit together. And it is going to hit the marginalized groups the hardest, first.

We don’t have the luxury of choosing our battles anymore people. We ALL have to be warriors. We ALL have to be Warriors. And, we ALL have to be

The Sutton Trust has looked at how prejudice about accents plays out at university & beyond...

Of course, as accent is not a 'protected characteristic' in legal terms, getting further than people's intuition that their accent has caused discrimination against them is difficult, but the the ST is right to highlight the issue.

Teaching for over decade (before I retired) at an elite (top 10) university, I often heard & saw such prejudices at work.

“It is very difficult to bring about climate action in a world that prioritizes individuals and in which we are so alienated from each other.”

A little similarity observation :

I'm a very kinda lawyer in a very rightist kinda region.

In meeting with clients over the years, I note that they often like to talk about politics. I'm not entirely sure why. Some, perhaps do so to "feel out" whether I'm their type of attorney. Some maybe think lawyers have some deeper political insight due to their connection to the law. I don't know. I just know it happens with great regularity.

And being a leftist in an extremely rightist world, you can imagine my discomfort.

Fortunately, I've found a strategy that seems to allow me to bond with clients no matter how rightwhackadoodle they seem. Are you ready for it?

one interesting impact of #workingfromhome has been a reduction in burglaries in areas with relatively high concentrations of #WFH households (one might call them #middleclass neighbourhoods?).

But, this may have displaced robberies & break-ins into areas with relatively less WFH households; those who work in sectors from hospitality to manufacturing, that require physical presence.. (shall we say #workingclass households?).

yet another #class effect of the 'new economy'!

It’s only seems strange because we’re so accustomed to screaming into the wind at the #elite who are the object of the #corporate platforms’ attention #economy.

Left to our own devices, it’s a no brainer that we help one another weather the insanity the elite daily thrust upon on all of us.

My social #class is a bit difficult to pin down.
