It’s interesting that whenever an “AI” article of mine does the rounds, the bit that always gets the most pushback also has the strongest foundation in research: that “AGI” as a concept is made-up sci-fi, ungrounded in reality, and too inconsistently defined to be anything other than bullshit

raphael_fl,
@raphael_fl@wandering.shop avatar

@baldur What is the "strong foundation in research" for your claim that no future development, no matter how unforeseeable from our time, could ever result in any kind of AGI?

W00t! The job posting for our new Deception Engineer position is up!

https://boards.greenhouse.io/greynoiseintelligence/jobs/4383231005?gh_jid=4383231005

This is your opportunity to design systems and networks to bait, trap, and dissect (again, BYOScalpel) our adversaries, plus make the internet a bit safer for everyone.

Hit me up with any q’s!

Apologies, in advance, for you having to work with @Glenn.

Offensive cyber operation already using generative AI. No wonder, no surprise either. "five state-affiliated actors disrupted that sought to use AI services in support of malicious cyber activities". China, N. Korea, Iran, Russia. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security/blog/2024/02/14/staying-ahead-of-threat-actors-in-the-age-of-ai/ https://openai.com/blog/disrupting-malicious-uses-of-ai-by-state-affiliated-threat-actors

@LukaszOlejnik But can that work? Isn't a generative-AI powered cyberattack likely to involve malware code that, because it was written by a generative AI, simply doesn't run properly?

Just found a new (to me) psychology phrase: "pluralistic ignorance". It refers to people holding one view but mistakenly assuming that the majority of others hold a different view, so they keep quiet. Very relevant for climate change action, where lots want action but think they're in the minority.

@helenczerski What about cases where people hold one view, mistakenly assume most people hold a different view, and therefore mistakenly see themselves as lone truth-tellers when they express their view?

Looking through threads in the last listserv I’m on and most threads over the past couple of weeks have been some form of infuriatingly shallow AI bubble posturing devoid of critical thought.

These are supposed to be the intellectuals in tech and publishing 😬

@baldur What's closer to your own view:

  1. That it might end up destroying the world? Or

  2. That it won't amount to much, but might cause a lot of people to lose money, cause a lot of people to lose their jobs, and make the general problem with the fast spread of lies even worse?

Relevant point about the impeachment vote: if the House had modified its rules to allow proxy voting for when members have medical issues, it would have passed. But Rep. Scalise is away getting treatment for cancer and couldn’t cast what would have been the deciding vote.

I got the grade of "A" I was expecting from my publisher for the manuscript I just turned in.

"Hi, wow! What a story! Here is my edit of BILL OF RIGHTS. It’s really good, and I found it very helpful to me as an adult, so I’m sure kids will appreciate it as they have to study it in the classroom. Teachers and librarians everywhere will thank you."

Edits are small word tinkers.

    https://onlysky.media/alee/why-libertarian-cities-fail/ An update on Rio Verde Foothills, the libertarian city in the desert in Arizona that I wrote about previously.

    RVF found a clever way to skirt Arizona regulations about having a water supply for new development. Then they discovered, to their total surprise, that even if you find a loophole in the law... humans still need water.

    Like the ant and the grasshopper, they were relying on others who planned better than they did. For several years, they were parasitizing the water supply of the neighboring town of Scottsdale, until Scottsdale had enough and cut them off.

    raphael_fl,
    @raphael_fl@wandering.shop avatar

    @daylightatheism Well, you're clearly being completely unfair. No one could have predicted that human beings need water. Besides, everyone knows that water comes from faucets.

    Speaking of AI systems being trained to hide lies among the truth, and to keep those lies intact through safety training ... In the 1957 film "The Invisible Boy", it is discovered that a sophisticated AI system, developed over decades, had planted 7 purposely false answers over 29 years of operations, specifically toward its plans for eventual world domination. And this was one really, seriously evil AI, as it turned out.

    raphael_fl,

    @lauren The idea of an AI lying intentionally, rather than because it's too dumb to tell lies from the truth, sounds kind of quaint these days.

    Three different problems:

    1. How do I get everyone who agrees with me into a room?

    2. How do I get everyone in a room to agree with me?

    3. How do I get everyone who doesn't agree with me out of the room?

    I think a lot of people on the left confuse these.

    (2) is the bread and butter of union organizers, but the look, feel, and compromises required are radically different from (1), and both of them are quite different from (3) except in trivial cases.
