It seems like the new default price for newly released #ebooks is $16.99 (CAD), although sometimes it's higher, of course. Just a year ago it was usually more like $14.99, which I already found expensive, and I remember noping out on $17.99 offerings.
Publishers do know this just pushes more people to libraries, right? I guess this is why they try so hard to limit library lending.
I like the convenience of the Books app, but Apple does that thing where I have to look at content depending on the current app store region. So, I wonder… What else is there?
Last time I asked for #recommendation the results were amazing so here goes another: looking for chapter books for 5-8yo kiddos!
My kid doesn’t read yet but we certainly have a good time when I read them out loud. So far we’ve read the following:
Roald Dahl: Witches, James and the Giant Peach (ongoing), and Charlie and the Choco Factory (lined up)
Harry Potter’s Year One: we have two and three but I’m leaving those for later. Probably after she turns 8 or so (she’s 5 now)
The Little Prince
Genre-wise, we’ve read #Fiction and #Fantasy but anything different would also be great. I’m up for anything that could continue to nurture interest in reading, empathy, wonder, and a good moral compass.
i #AmReading Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, and it's soooo gooood! i usually listen to audiobooks before bed and i get sleepy after 15-30 mins. not with this book, i do not 😁 it's so packed with action and drama and dragons and danger and daggers pew pew pew (why does everything start on a D? 🤔)
i appreciate especially how cool the protagonist is with her sexuality and body, and she has flaws, how refreshing 😁
After three long years of struggling with the book and analyzing it I finally put my thoughts into a coherent blogpost. I never expected the Ministry to be #solarpunk , but I hoped that it will paint a future to look forward to.
Please allow me to introduce myself. #Moby-Dick is the novelistic soundtrack of my life. The rest is #Dylan. #Dogs, #coffee, #books (especially #19th-century US lit) make me very happy. I write, think, and talk a lot about dementia, most recently a book with Dr. Bruce Miller of UCSF, Finding the Right Words: A Story of Literature, Grief, and the Brain (Johns Hopkins, 2021).
I’m still plugging along with David Copperfield( I haven’t made a lot of progress this week, but am sticking with it) & also reading Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann, this was on my summer list, but I didn’t get to it then. #books#photography#fediverse@bookstodon
This means receiving books as presents and then just passing it along, whether good or bad. Please comment below, if there's enough responses it will be added to an article.
Moving over from Reddit, I don't want to just lurk here, so I thought I'd introduce myself by mentioning the last science fiction novels I read along with how I enjoyed them. I just reread what I wrote and I believe they are spoiler-free, though I may be corrected on that point....
This never occurred to me. I read anytime throughout the day - whenever it strikes the mood. I think reading is good for you, no matter the time of day.
Anybody else feel the same as the writer of the opinion piece?
I chair the campus committee that selects the annual “Community Read.” This book is assigned to all incoming first-year students, but faculty, staff, alumni, and the entire learning community are encouraged to engage. It’s one of the cooler parts of my job.
This year, we’ve narrowed things down to these three:
Born 106 years ago this month, Gwendolyn Brooks is one of the most influential & widely read 20th century poets. With over 20 published books, she earned immense respect during her lifetime. For 32 years, she was the poet laureate of IL. She was the FIRST Black poet to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the FIRST Black woman named as the Library of Congress’ Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry.
I really like @xor's Python script for generating domain names from public domain books, so I turned it, with permission, into a website, to make it easier to use.
I've just come across the Old English compound word "hord-wynn" (hoard-joy), which refers to treasure that delights.
That's how I'm going to be thinking of my library from now on 🥰 📚 #Life#Books#Words#Etymology
Do you read books that you know you're going to hate, or think you're going to hate? Feel free to add comments below on why - will add a few of these to an article. Also, if you could please share, that would be most helpful.
OC The last four science fiction books I read. (I don't believe there are any spoilers)
