40 years ago today: Cowrock Mountain was the star of the show today, with many views from the open, rocky ledges and terraces around the summit. There were more great views of that maze of mountains and narrow valleys threading west and northwest towards the Western fork of the Blue Ridge. #backpacking#landscapephotography#hiking#hikingadventures#georgia#mountains#nature#forest

40 years ago today: I went to bed right after dinner but was not destined to get much sleep. Somewhere around 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning, the stillness of the mountain night was broken by the long, eerie shrieks of mortars plummeting to earth and subsequent loud explosions. #backpacking#hiking#outdoors#landscapephotography#Georgia#nature#forests#mountains
For #ThickTrunkTuesday, here is a large Sitka Spruce tree I found on my backpacking trip this last weekend. The tree is in front of a battery at Fort Stevens State Park, which was built near the end of the Civil War.

40 years ago today: I woke up to the sound of freight trains. One after another, they came clattering up from the distant mountain range to the west, circled the woods around my tent, and churned off toward the eastern horizon. My tent was pitched in a small, grassy clearing on the summit of Frosty Mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northern Georgia. #backpacking#hiking#outdoors#landscapephotography#Georgia#nature#forests#mountains
Last night when I arrived, I pitched my tent at the hiker biker camp at Fort Stevens and then headed out for a sunset beach hike. Checked out the Peter Iredale shipwreck and hiked a few miles on the beach. Sunset was beautiful. Currently headed toward Seaside, Oregon on the beach.
We seem to be getting a break from the rain so I’m full stream ahead preparing for my first backpacking trip of the year this weekend. The plan is to section hike part of the Oregon Coast Trail. So excited!
