So if you get this using an adblocker on YouTube, I'm finding that going into incognito mode works for keeping ads down and not worrying about being blocked by youtube #youtube#adblock#adblocker#incognito#workaround
The privilege of enraged people with regards to the fine volunteer maintainers who spent sweat and tears to serve us with #Adblock software stood out:
> And then one of the moderators actually deleted their Reddit account. “The ID in the post wasn’t updated because my mother was hospitalized,” they said
It's not like I didn't know full well that it was gonna happen, but boy howdy is saying any nice thing about Large Internet Company on Mastodon quite the exercise.
I'm just another noodle on the internet - what do I know?
But perhaps if any mention of a mainstream anything invites You're Doing it Wrong and you Should Feel Bad About Your Opinions as responses by default... maybe this place isn't so fun.
I'm not turning #adblock off or stopping using #newpipe and #rss though. Ads are a security and mental health risk and I like controlling my viewing experience instead of an #algorithm.
@nixCraft I think the recent #youtube#adblock debate is a great reminder of how much privacy we can lose if we act like it’s ok cause “we got nothing to hide”.
Recently installed #tubesync after seeing #YouTube's anti #adblock popups.. I didn't want to lose my favourite channels, and wasn't about to buy premium, and so here we are :D
It's pretty great, very simple and does exactly what I need it to do. I'm using #plex as the media server to watch all the content it downloads. No ads and no banners. It also supports deleting old content after it's been dowloaded for X days, so I don't have to fill my drive with 1080/1440p of LinusTechTips from a year ago.
Trying out #NoScript to block the loading of #Javascript on websites. I honestly don't know why I should use it, but it is fun to play with. Really speeds up loading times at least.
Today I filed a formal complaint against #YouTube with the Irish Data Protection Commissioner for their illegal deployment of #adblock detection technologies.
Under Article 5(3) of 2002/58/EC YouTube are legally obligated to obtain consent before storing or accessing information already stored on an end user's terminal equipment unless it is strictly necessary for the provisions of the requested service.
In 2016 the EU Commission confirmed in writing that adblock detection requires consent.
Possible 🌶️ take, but I think it makes sense that #youtube wants to stop #adblock. It takes a lot of money to run YT. And to make it accessible for free is insane financially. And while I don't think you should have to pay for access. Having an ad supported version and a ad-free 'premium' version, makes sense imo.
