It is actually a right to access responsibly. But what the hell, it will always be used as a stick to beat Scotland by most of the MSM.
I am however very very amused. This must be the first vaguely positive article the Guardian has published about Scotland. Have they got the right country? Or was their ;Scottish Correspondent' on hols?
The vote on the #RightToContraceptionAct was 51-39, falling short of the 60 votes needed to defeat a #filibuster & move forward. Republicans said the bill is unnecessary as the use of #BirthControl is protected under #SCOTUS precedent as if [#SupremeCourt precedent means anything anymore].
#Republicans Lisa #Murkowski of Alaska & #SusanCollins of Maine voted w/ #Democrats in support of the bill. #Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, switched his vote to “no” for procedural reasons so he could bring up the bill again at a later date.
#ClarenceThomas’s concurring opinion begins on page 117. On page 119 Thomas specifically states “in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court's substantive due process #precedents, including #Griswold, Lawrence, & Obergefell.”
30—70% of fertilized eggs NEVER IMPLANT SUCCESSFULLY, EVEN WITHOUT #BirthControl, acc/to Michael Belmonte, an #OBGYN in DC & a #FamilyPlanning expert w/the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOG). #Laws restricting #abortion#access in some states, including Idaho, have defined life as beginning at fertilization.
Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (#GAAD). Today, I want you to ask yourself, then act, before you speak. Do you have an app you're maintaining? Look at some #accessibility resources for the framework you use for the user interface. Do you know if it's accessible or not? If it's not accessible, are you doing anything about it? Do you tell disabled visitors to your app/site that it's not accessible, and give them a timeframe, if any, when it will be? Do you have a website? If so, do you know if it's accessible or not? Are you an artist of any kind? Is your media accessible? Are you a writer? If so, are the images in your book described with #AltText?
If you're a part of a company that has anything to do with accessibility, including proudly posting about it, do you have any disabled employees? If so, do you show them that they're appreciated? If not, why don't you have any? If you create art about people with disabilities, do you have disabled people take a look at it before you share it? If you write books that have images in them, have any disabled people checked to make sure the Alt-text makes sense, and that the book is accessible otherwise? If not, why not? And when you get disabled people to check out apps, books, sites for your professional needs, do you pay them for it?
Please do remember us on every other day of the year, but particularly today, please remember: nothing about us without us.

“This is a fight for freedom, the fundamental freedom to make decisions about one’s own body & not have their government tell them what they’re supposed to do,” the VP said.
“As we know, almost 2 yrs ago, the highest court in our land, the court of Thurgood & RBG, took a constitutional right that had been recognized from the people of America, from the women of America. And now, in states across our nation, extremists have proposed & passed #laws that criminalize doctors, punish women – laws that threatened doctors & nurses w/prison time, even for life, simply for providing #ReproductiveCare,” VP #KamalaHarris said.
“Donald #Trump hand picked 3 members of the #UnitedStates#SupremeCourt because he intended for them to overturn #Roe, & as he intended, they did.”
#KamalaHarris harkened back to her grilling, as a senator on the judiciary cmte, of 2 of Trump’s #SCOTUS nominees, saying it was clear after their confirmation that the days of nationwide #abortion#access were numbered:
Aira Access AI. Went to Amazon.com on my computer and the first thing was a captcha that I had to do in order to get into my account. I used Access AI to take a picture of my screen, then asked it to tell me the characters in the image. It quickly came back and said, the characters in the image is, and listed the five letters. The best thing is that it was totally correct! Way to go @AiraVI, Access AI knocked it out of the park! 🤩 #Aira#Access#AI#Blind#Accessibility
#Iowa’s Supreme Court heard oral arguments Thurs in a case that could decide the future of #abortion in that state, the latest in a series of #legal battles that threaten abortion #access across the country during a historic #election year.
The #Iowa justices questioned whether the case should be sent back to the district court for further arguments & review.
“Every justice on this court has recognized that the state plays a vital role in protecting unborn life. The legislature & the governor agree,” Solicitor Gen Eric Wessan said in his opening stmnt. He urged the 7 justices, all of them #Republican appointees, to rule so that the #6weekBan can proceed.
For now, #abortion remains #legal in #Iowa up to 22 wks of pregnancy. The #law, if upheld, would limit the procedure to a time frame in which many women don’t yet know they are #pregnant. It has limited exceptions for #rape & #incest or if the woman’s life is in danger.
This latest legal battle comes at the end of a flurry of abortion developments nationwide that could have major implications for the presidential election in Nov.
What’s so bad about a road?
Roads are forest killers.
"A road means access. Once roads are bulldozed into rainforests, illegal loggers, miners, poachers and landgrabbers arrive. Once they get access, they can destroy forests, harm native ecosystems and even drive out or kill indigenous peoples. This looting of the natural world robs cash-strapped nations of valuable natural resources."
@Bellingen "these roads can be actively encouraged by aggressive infrastructure-expansion schemes — most notably China’s Belt and Road Initiative, now active in more than 150 nations."
I never considered the full implications of China's Belt and Road Initiative, but it's clearly going to cause a lot of harm, including non-obvious effects like this logging. I shouldn't be surprised that roads are harmful, but I guess they're a harm that keeps on harming.
@aral Oh, our daughter was almost dropped as a patient by her medical provider, when we chose to not give consent to electronic processing of her health data - until we pointed out that this is illegal under GDPR regulations.
@StephanieOrtoleva I can tell you exactly what they’ll find. I’m in India visiting for a couple of weeks and things are bad here. The physical infrastructure is absolutely terrible. And with the audits or capture is the fact that peoples attitude towards disabled people is even worse.
Fairscope do many other great things, but I LOVED the “Chairigami” furniture they were using on their stand here at the Ocean Sciences meeting. It was robust and comfortable and easy to flat pack. More of this!
@Wen Funny enough, this from Guy Shrubsole crossed my timeline a couple of minutes before I read this post. If you haven't read Guy's books, I'd recommend them.
