Picked & to make small for Mom. The roses smell divine!

I got the vase for free. It's part of set of 3 glassblown art vases. Got them from a free pile from local estate clear out, a few years ago. I'm good at scoring lots of & rarely buy anything new.

Bouquet of red & deep pink roses with red weigela flowers in a green & white glassbown artisan vase.

Frugal is not the same thing as cheap. I'm very frugal with obtaining useful things & quite mindful about how I spend money. I won't buy things just because they're on sale - if it's not anything I need. I won't skimp on quality for some items but will look for things that are used before looking at anything new.

Frugality is a lifestyle for me. My parents taught me how to live frugally & with lower environmental, personal impact.

Life is all about our personal choices. I choose frugal living.

@msquebanh Getting only good things and only when needed has been nothing but wonderful for me.

It's a very different way of living.

But it also means that I'm not constantly throwing junk out.

When I throw something out a few months after buying it, it feels like I'm throwing cash into the bin.

Awful feeling.

I'll always try hard to avoid that.

@msquebanh my parents have an amazing Quince tree that produces gigantic fruit. I need to convince my wife.... 😆

@chris You can make so much different foods & alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks with them too. I hope your wife says, Yes - to quince tree.

#Jasmine is blooming again. We keep them indoors for 3/4 of year & move outside for late Spring-Summer. Good indoor natural air purifying #plant. Flowers are #edible & used to make tea & fruits used in #Chinese #TraditionalMedicine.

@Vanalope We use 3 & 5 gallon pots. We propagate them so baby ones are in much smaller pots until roots get strong & several branches have developed. We transplant to 3 & then 5, as they grow & bush out.

@msquebanh@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@Vanalope We grow all of ours & our ginseng plants in pots & move indoors after Summer/hot season is over. It gets too cold here to leave outside all year.

In Winter, we just move pots into unheated greenhouse & they keep on providing us food. Same with a few other salad greens.

@kellyromanych They're tasty greens!

I only see one?
Doh. Counting bumblebees as bees!
Not intuitive to me. Swedish might be pretty darn close to English (in a global view), but our word for bumblebees is entirely separate from bees. Humla & bi. So I guess that carries over for me.

msquebanh,
@msquebanh@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@Gurre We have one word in Teochew for bees - it's pronounced (phonetically), pAngue.

@enog @kayakpatrick There was zero people on the boardwalk earlier - just me & Mom. Then, just me on way back because my Mom freaked the heck out over loud noise in forest & ran like hell, back to car 🤣 She thought it was a bear. It was a raccoon.

#CowParsnip is the ONLY #Heracleum species that's native to #NorthAmerica. There's many look-a-likes including the very toxic giant hogweed. I don't recommend trying to #forage & harvest them unless you're very experienced with identifying differences because it's dangerous to do so.

@msquebanh I immediately thought "danger" when I saw the pictures.

There's an invasive type here, the Heracleum mantegazzianum, which does look slightly different from this one.

It's not associated with anything positive. The sap causes swelling and blisters, and may leave scars if enough skin is damaged.

It's a target for eradication, though that's very hard to achieve.

msquebanh,
@msquebanh@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@justafrog All other Heracleums are invasive in North America. Only this one is not & it's a longtime Indigenous food & medicinal plant.
