Une question technique pour les geeks.
Je bosse entre autres sous unix/#linux depuis 1986. Mais je suis pas admin system. J'ai a plusieurs reprises installé en #dualboot sur mon pc (win10/ubuntu) mais à chaque fois à terme, lors de mise à jour de windows, le double boot disparait ou foire lamentablement.
Est-ce toujours le cas avec #win11?
Y-a t'il une solution plus robuste? J'ai malheureusement besoin de windows à cause #adobe #ZBrush...
Vos conseils sont les bienvenus.

I recently bought a chinese MiniPC with Win11 Pro preinstalled on it. Sinc I will put a Linux on that system, I wonder how to preserve the Win11 Pro stuff for reinstallation.

How can I identify if an install partition is on there?
How can I preserve it (maybe by creating a disk image with gparted or similar)?
How can I extract the windows key for reinstallation?

Any suggestions?

I don't think there is a substantial difference in #UX between #MacOS and #Win11. There are lots of visual 'skinning' tweaks but the basic structural model of files/folders/2d windowing/invisible clipboard feels pretty baked at this point.

Are there any #Linux distros that break the mold? Shake things up a bit?

My point is that I feel all desktop #UXs have pretty much stagnated and no one is really trying anything different. I'd LOVE to hear of any crazy experiments.

It seems that Microsoft is clamping down on creating Local Accounts during Windows 11 setup.

None of the usual tricks using OOBE or MSOOBE from a CMD window during installation and working for me today 🤨

Busy converting one of my #Linux focussed #python scripts to run on #Win11. Obviously nearly everything runs 1-1 but the way I send notifications needed some tweaking.

I have used win10toast before but often had hassles with it pausing the script. Glad to have found win11toast which fixes all that!

Okay, it's not just me. 🐧

My workmate, a long time Windows-only developer and gamer just complained about Windows 11 to me and asked for advice regarding Linux.

With everything I have seen this year, I do believe that there is an increased interest in the Linux desktop and we will see an incresing amount of gaming systems convert to Linux.

But, let's be realistic. I predict that over the course of 2024, the desktop Linux market share will grow from 3% to 4%.

Want to install #PopOS alongside #win11 but I can't find any good guides from the vendor or otherwise. I'd like to get all the nice PopOS features like a restore partition, but it really wants to wipe the whole drive and start from zero.

I am generally in favor of doing this but in this case, I need to retain the exisitng #Windows partition for a few weeks.

Edit: it would probably be easier to install PopOS and then shrink & add a Windows partition, but I want to keep the one I have now (and its corresponding restore partition).

Any leads?

Bei #win11 , bei den Taskleiste Optionen können die Sekunden bei der Uhr eingeblendet werden. Aber ACHTUNG! das verbraucht dann mehr Strom.....
Mich würde jetzt echt und ohne scheiss interessieren, wie gross der Einfluss auf den Stromverbrauch ist. Ich meine, ist das wirklich messbar?

so my start menu stopped working again. On a whim, I hit Windows + S to see if the search box thing would open. It didn't. But then I hit the windows key again, and the start menu works again now. Somehow. For some reason. Anyway yeah that's a thing.

The Thomson TO7 came before the MO5. Whereas the MO5 had a gate array for video, the first TO7s did it all with discrete logic.

Also two IO chips, why? Well, they wanted a timer (for flashing the cursor and tape IO).
They also needed extra ROM because the OS didn't fit in 4KB.

The MC6846 PIO chip has 2KB of ROM. It was designed for "2-chip computers" e.g. CPU + MC6846 (ROM + IO + Timer)

So 6KB ROM. Not enough for BASIC. So put it on a cartridge.
Or how about LOGO?

I write a simple "Carré" procedure (repeats four times forward 'n' right 90) Then I call "Carré" with different arguments and it draws squares of varying sizes. Finally I repeat 10 squares angled at 36 degrees so it looks kinda sorta like a flower.

jeder Verzicht ist bekanntlich ein Gewinn. Nachdem ich vor nunmehr 9 Monaten #twitter, #facebook gelöscht habe und zu #mastodon gewechselt bin, habe ich nun den nächsten Schritt gewagt und #windows verbannt. Obwohl ich schon seit 2015 nicht mehr produktiv damit gearbeitet habe sondern seitdem nur noch #macos war es dennoch spannend mein Lapop neu aufzusetzen, meine Wahl fiel auf #linuxmint #LMDE5 . Ich war bin begeistert wie einfach und funktional das gemacht ist, besser als #Win11 . ½

Has anyone had win 11 respond to keyboard audio buttons (Vol Up, Vol Down, Mute) by showing the On Screen slider, but not actually change the volume?
