Is #PopOS_COSMIC serious!?!? I used to love #Pop_OS back in the day when they used a near stock Gnome DE. I never liked the way Pop!_OS worked against the upstream and how outdated that distribution is nowadays. But Cosmic is so ugly and forcing the themes on apps that explicitly beg you not to do so is just insane. I wouldn't mind if apps had a check to see if they are ran on Cosmic and just segfault if so.
My Linux laptop used to suspend perfectly. I'd close the lid and it would go to sleep. Open it up, it would spring to life - presenting me with a password screen. But, some time in the last few months, it has stopped doing that. If I close the lid, it keeps running. This is […]
Ok, the way the search/launcher menu on #KDE#Plasma highlights an item in random as you're typing a search query (instead of highlighting the top item) so that it often opens a random file instead of the most likely match drives me NUTS.
I should just use #KRunner more often, as it doesn't seem to have that quirk.
Q. “I am blind, and I have been since 2021. I have grown very accustomed to using NVDA on Windows, which is a free open source screen reader. It's great… my question is, does Linux have good support for screen reading software?”
A. “As someone that deals with this on a daily basis: The short answer is 'no' … The best advice I can give you is to not bother investing too much in Linux and keep with Windows, or move to macOS.”
@aral vast bulk of funding goes to server #linux kernel features, which is why the kernel is incredibly robust compared to in particular OSX's kernel. Right now, for example, #Pop_OS is building their new #Cosmic desktop/compositor, with a team of 7 developers. MS, Apple, Google field 10s of thousands, and can assign any group of them to any feature, that's their job.
I'd say if you interact with Linux, desktops, compositors, tools, and go YES!, it's for you. If not, maybe not best fit.
As I ordered a #laptop after years of struggle (#Asus TUF A16 from #2023), it's likely I will need a new #Linux#distro. Which apparently brings us to the #2024 Best General Use #OS#Competition! Please meet our contestants:
#Windows 11 – the most popular OS on market. But is it really good? Unlikely.
#LinuxMint Cinnamon Edge – in my experience the best by far, intuitive, just works and never gets in your way. But can it handle a laptop that's not even a year old?
#pop_os – at this point honestly why not, I wanted to try it anyway.
If you have more suggestions for the ultimate general use #Linux#distro (or other serious OS?) please let me know, I'll add it to the list. If you have some common tasks or benchmarks I should run also please let me know.
Where does #Vivaldi / #VivaldiBrowser store its #pwa configurations? #Linux here.
I have a PWA or "shortcut open as desktop" that opens to the wrong URL. The behavior of the app makes that hard to configure using the UI (it automatically redirects); I want to hand-edit a file.
I shifted my desktop #gaming computer to #Linux today, installing #Pop_OS on a second SSD. So far, it is doing everything I want it to. I play mostly #StarWars Battlefront 2 (2017), and I got that running pretty well (AMD graphics card seems key). The #SteamDeck has really made linux gaming viable! Everything else I do is standard (web sites, document management, backup, etc). Let's hope this sticks permanently! #FOSS
What Wayland is missing is a solid, reliable toolkit for making simple graphical applications.
Every time that I start designing a GUI the process converged on designing my own GUI because there’s simply nothing that has first class support for Wayland.
I’m also slowly accepting the fact that I might have to implement one someday.
This is actually Bullshit, like how tf is it not supported when the entire fucking thing runs in Chrome?? also why is it only telling me now? #Pop_OS#Linux
Other than computing I'm into #horror both movies and #books. Recently decided to get a Kindle and get #reading again to help fuel my #creativewriting.
I like to post #digitalart/#aiart as well! It fun and interesting stuff.
#opensource chat server Rocket Chat decided to make their latest upgrade plain abusive. If you run your own, you are now required to enrole in a trial of their premium proprietary nonsense and it's likely the server is spying on it's admins and users.
great
Looks like #inkscape is going to have to move chat systems. There's just no way to regain trust in an upstream that is abusive. Not without forking away from the abusers.
