Seeing this week's theme for theme for #VGMWednesday is #GamingLikeAKid... I know the song from my childhood that made me a lifelong fan of composer Michiko Naruke!
One of my favorite jazz video game covers comes from Estradasphere that did a remix of Super Mario Brothers 2 (American version)'s music entitled "Super Buck II."
This past weekend, we stopped at a tiny arcade at the hotel I stayed at with the family. They have one of the two greatest arcade games of all time - Ms. Pac-Man and Mortal Kombat II.
Don't argue with me...that's totally a fact.
Regardless, as the main screens cycled through I took this picture. There was a screen that showed up with details on how to order the soundtrack as well as two different Mortal Kombat comic books back when this dropped in 1993.
I wonder...do you think that's still valid? And if not, do you think there's folks out there who still have copies of these comics / the CD? Cause...I kind of want them.
Also, who stood around in an arcade in 1993 with a pen and paper to write down all this information? Cause I want to meet those people too...
This week @miona is BACK for VGM Wednesday! Welcome back!
She comes at us with a fantastic theme of "Super Sixteen Bit."
From the Genesis / SNES era, one of my favorite beat 'em ups is Comix Zone. For those who never played, it tells the story of a comic book artist who gets pulled into his own comic by it's main villain. He then has to fight from panel to panel to survive. It's cool and has a 16-bit rock inspired soundtrack.
It's #VGMWednesday and todays theme is #SuperSixteenBit One of my favorite and most played Sega Megadrive (Genesis) games was Streets of Rage 2. The soundtrack is still a banger!
It still blows my mind that composer Yuzo Koshiro was only 22 back then 🤯 He started composing video game soundtracks when still in high school. Check out a photo of his setup in 1989 in this recent feature:
That's 3, I know, but after 3 I really couldn't think of any more apart from Cake's "The Distance" and instead of spending way too much time looking things up, I'll end it here and add to it if I think of more.
Last week reminded me of some of the classic @ocremix tracks I used to listen to.
Here is Estradasphere's big band inspire remake of Super Mario Brothers 2's overworld music entitled, "Super Buck II." https://ocremix.org/remix/OCR00577
Okay, @miona's #VGMWednesday has a theme of #Sampled - looking for songs where elements from video game music is incorporated into the beat / melody of a song.
Let's take it back to 1995 when Bone Thugs-N-Harmony sampled the underrated #SegaGenesis fighting game Eternal Champions in their aptly titled track, "Eternal."
I guess I'll participate in this because this week's theme is space game music and I want to share a great theme from a game that I like but many people don't: Mass Effect Andromeda (aka Skies of Arcadia in space). Regardless of what you think of the game, the soundtrack by John Paranoid is gorgeous and the opening theme has a very TV show feel to it.
If you like the King's Quest VI soundtrack, you might also like it on vinyl. My mate Erik spent the last two years making a reorchestration of the soundtrack with live instruments and he's crowdfunding a vinyl release now.
Moved yet again, this time to a self-hosted firefish instance :3
I'm an AuDHD transbian girl being gay and silly on fedi. :spinny_cat_trans::spinny_cat_lesbian: I only recently started transitioning and I'm trying to be more open about my emotions. :neocat_floof_cute:
Expect lots of shitposts/random nonsense, selfies, gay yearning and emotion dumping (both positive and negative, but under a CW). ^^
I like video games, mostly indie and Nintendo ones (e.g. osu!, Touhou, TLoZ, Metroid, Celeste, Crypt of the NecroDancer etc), and I also stream them. ^^
I also listen to a lot of video game music and their covers, and I can talk about languages, though I almost never post about either for some reason.
Disclaimer: the above info is correct at the time of writing, but it will become outdated over time, as my hyperfixations shift around every few months. My overall set of interests is fairly static tho, so if I will be circling back to the previous ones eventually. :neocat_floof_happy:
I'm also a GNOME developer (mostly maintaining libadwaita and a few third party apps), and I will occasionally post updates about that, but this is my personal account first and foremost, so don't expect a lot of posts about it :3
I'm also developing a game emulator frontend called Highscore, but how many spoons I have for it varies wildly over time :neocat_sad:
