#Wetlands are very effective at reducing water pollution. #Research shows that restoring wetlands in 5% of land can slash nitrogen pollution by up to half.
Coastal wetlands have unique superpowers to help tackle the biggest threats to the #GreatBarrierReef like #ClimateChange and water pollution.
Did you know that #SharkCulling programs in #NSW and #Queensland have never been assessed under our national environment laws ?
That’s despite the fact that #nets and lethal drumlines in NSW and QLD have caught 174 #CriticallyEndangered grey nurse #sharks in the past decade, killing 70. Over the same time, a massive 538 threatened marine #turtles were also caught across both states, with at least 183 killed.
Tell the Federal Environment Minister it’s time for change.
For the first time in over 20 years, national #EnvironmentalLaws are being rewritten. Tell Federal Environment Minister, #TanyaPlibersek that you want her to require the #NSW and #Queensland shark culling programs to be subject to national environment laws.
Keeping #dolphins, #orcas and other cetaceans in #captivity is cruel. Depriving them of the vast open spaces and social bonds that they would normally have in the wild, and confining them to small, concrete #tanks to perform tricks for dead fish is highly unethical for these complex marine mammals. No matter how sophisticated the enclosure, no man made facility can ever hope to replicate the wild world of dolphins and whales.
Every summer, the Faroe Islands’ beaches are soaked with #whale and #dolphin blood as hundreds of these majestic creatures are needlessly slaughtered.
Fishers in boats circle the whales and dolphins, driving them into shallow waters before killing them with knives.
The government says it is an Indigenous tradition that feeds families on the islands, but only a handful of locals consume whale and dolphin meat yet they kill over 1000 a year.
We've just begun to understand the lives of awe-inspiring ocean dwellers like massive #BlueWhales, singing #humpbacks and ancient leatherback #SeaTurtles. Sadly hundreds of thousands of these creatures suffer or die every year from #entanglement in #FishingGear.
According to NOAA Fisheries, 446 large whales got tangled in commercial fishing gear between 2017 and 2022 — and that's likely just a fraction of the actual number of entanglements.
On a practical level, though, regulations and high costs have stopped fishing communities from quickly, widely adopting the new technology — and wildlife can't wait. NOAA Fisheries needs to speed things up by championing this common-sense solution in its federal rules.
Tell the agency to support the widespread adoption of pop-up fishing gear, a tried-and-tested alternative to commercial fishing gear that will save the lives of countless marine animals.
END ALL IMPORTS & EXPORTS OF DOLPHINS ACROSS U.S. BORDERS
Captive #dolphins and #whales are transported across the world to #aquariums and #MarineParks. These animals are ripped away from their families and all they know, forced to live in barren concrete #tanks. Transportation is a stressful process for these animals. The journey itself poses significant risks. Stress-induced illnesses and health problems are an issue and in the worst cases it can lead to death. When transported,
it is far removed from their natural #environment. Dolphins kept in captivity are known to suffer from stress-related health issues and illnesses. Confining these animals to lives in tanks is inhumane and selfish.
Join us in asking Members of Congress to amend the #MarineMammalProtectionAct to stop any imports or exports of dolphins across U.S. Borders.
The South Taranaki Bight is home to blue #whales, Māui and Hector’s #dolphins, kororā (little #penguins), and key fishing grounds. You may already know that it is under threat once again by the possibility of #SeabedMining. Trans Tasman Resources ( #TTR ) is seeking consent to #mine the seabed of the South Taranaki Bight - to dig up to 50 million tonnes of ironsands a year for over 30 years, dumping 45 million tonnes back onto the seafloor.
A company in Spain has a plan to torture a million octopuses per year – by raising them in crowded tanks and then killing them by putting them in icy water, which causes a slow, stressful death.
The company knows octopuses are highly intelligent and feel pleasure, pain, joy and fear, but this is their way of turning a huge profit. Now they’re being slammed by scientists and the media – and if enough of us add to the pressure right now we can stop them.
ABOLISH SEISMIC BLASTING SPECIAL PROSPECTING AUTHORITY PERMITS (SPA)
A Special Prospecting Authority (SPA) is a specific type of permit that allows #companies to buy access to large areas of our #oceans to use #SeismicBlasting to search for #oil and #gas, and Carbon Capture and Storage locations below the ocean floor.
Seismic blasts are how the oil and gas industry surveys the ocean floor. Seismic vessels tow an array of airguns and audio receivers (hydrophones) behind them in the water.
These powerful #airguns fire loud blasts of compressed air every 10 to 15 seconds, 24 hours a day. The sound waves produced penetrate deep into the #seabed and bounce back to the audio receivers. From the sound patterns detected, #companies can work out the most likely place to find oil and gas reserves under the ocean floor. The next step is exploratory #drilling.
I urge you to re-list the West Indian manatee subpopulations, including the #Florida manatee, as endangered. One-fifth of Florida manatees died in the last two years alone. Their #population can’t sustain such heavy losses.
#Pollution in the water has created massive algal blooms which block the sun from reaching the sea floor, killing the #seagrass
#Manatees, their #habitat and their food sources all need better #protections. Please restore manatees’ full protections under the #EndangeredSpeciesAct and devote more resources to saving these gentle animals.
International corporation K+S is asking for government approval to build an industrial saltworks in eastern #ExmouthGulf. Our map shows how huge the project is compared to the city of #Sydney - it’s the size of nearly 12,000 MCG footy ovals!
If the Government approves the application, the #saltworks would be built over nationally listed #wetlands that play a vital role in delivering nutrients to the #Gulf.
The region is home to #HumpbackWhales, #orcas, #dugongs, endangered #turtles, critically endangered #sawfish, and migratory #shorebirds. It’s an unspoilt #environment with strong #ecological linkages to the World Heritage-listed #Ningaloo Coast, and we can’t believe K+S thinks this development could ever be environmentally responsible. Let the government know Exmouth Gulf is too precious to sacrifice for salt.
Delfine in Not!
GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST DEEP SEA MINING IN THE ARCTIC
The Norwegian government’s alarming new proposal to open up an area nearly the size of the United Kingdom and Ireland combined for exploration and exploitation of #DeepSea minerals would have severe repercussions for the environment and the people who depend on it. Together, we can stand up to them!
The area of the #ArcticOcean that #Norway wants to start #mining in is home to essential fish populations,
#Scientists believe that as many as 10 million #species may inhabit the deep sea, the majority of which are yet to be discovered. The high #Arctic is an environment of international significance, and is home to important marine species.
Imagine living your entire life in your living room, the vast world outside becoming an alien concept. For #dolphins in #MarineParks, this analogy becomes a harsh reality. Confined within the limited dimensions of an artificial enclosure, these sentient creatures endure a daily assault of bright lights and booming noises, while their instinctive urge to explore and socialize is constantly thwarted.
PLEDGE TO NEVER SET FOOT IN DOLPHIN MARINE PARKS 🐬
Instead, choose to experience these magnificent creatures in their true domain – wild, free, and unconfined. Your commitment could ripple across the world, becoming a powerful wave of change.
It is with a heavy heart that I write to you on the first red cove day of 2023, a day that witnessed the ruthless #hunting and #slaughter of ~10 innocent Risso's #dolphins in #Taiji. The dolphins fought hard to escape but after a 2 hour chase, the entire #pod was forced into the cove and brutally killed.
Our team is not just standing by. At the end of August we submitted an appeal
The Gulf of Mexico is home to Rice's whales, one of the world's most endangered whale species. Fewer than 50 of these magnificent mammals remain — yet they have no federally protected critical #habitat.
Species who also have critical #habitat are twice as likely to recover as those without.
Rice's #whales can't withstand the constant disruptions harming their small, struggling population. Designating critical habitat is essential to giving these whales the space they need to survive — and, one day, thrive again.
Tell NOAA Fisheries to protect critical habitat for these highly endangered creatures.
"I think so many people just think it’s this place that has penguins and it doesn’t impact anyone,” says Bransome. “But it’s often referred to as the ‘beating heart of the planet,’ because the currents send nutrients to the #GlobalOcean feeding fisheries and #biodiversity throughout the ocean. It stores the majority of #heat and #carbon that’s created. It really impacts us all.”
WE HAVE UNTIL AUGUST 11 TO STOP MASSIVE SEISMIC BLASTING
The #SeismicBlasting proposal between Victoria and Tasmania impact #BlueWhale habitat and the #ZeehanMarinePark .
A joint venture between seismic survey companies #TGS and #SLB-Schlumberger is trying to get regulatory approval for seismic blasting over 55,000 sq km of our #oceans. Now is our chance to provide public comment that these plans should be refused to protect our oceans and #MarineLife.
Seismic blasting is deadly for marine life and can impact all levels of the food chain from its very foundations, killing #zooplankton more than a kilometre away, to deafening #whales.
We all know that plastic is directly killing our #wildlife. But did you know that it’s polluting our #atmosphere too?
New research commissioned by #AMCS and #WWFAustralia finally reveals the hidden climate cost of #Australia ’s plastics addiction, and the results are shocking.
In 2020, Australia’s plastics use produced more than 16 million metric tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). That’s equivalent to 5.7 million cars on the road every year.
The next most important tools were to power #recycling with clean, #RenewableEnergy, and to replace virgin fossil fuel plastics with recycled or plant-based plastics.
"the UK is considered to be the second-biggest producer of plastic waste per capita in the world and fifth-largest producer of single-use plastic waste."
