Polish hackers figured out that a train manufacturer had programmed its trains to break down after certain dates, or if they were serviced at another company's workshop.
Extraordinary that there's virtually no coverage in western media of China's extraordinary expansion of its railway network, and no questions about why we can't or don't do the same #Railway#China#Europe#US
If you're a European Union citizen, you should know that there's an initiative going around, to connect all EU capitals with a high-speed railway network.
The social, economical and ecological benefits of this project are absolutely massive.
If you're in the #UK , the petition to require #train companies to keep ticket offices and staff at #railway stations only needs another 3,500 signatures to force a parliamentary debate, so please sign if you haven't already.
It's a really important #accessibility issue, and the closures are opposed by the RMT (National #Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers) .
Tunnel Vision: An Unauthorized BART Ride is a documentary film by local timelapse photographer Vincent Woo. Embark on a journey with a camera secretly attached to a BART train and ride through the arteries of the Bay Area. A hidden world is revealed through intersecting passageways, flashes of graffiti, and sections of track only witnessed by BART operators:
My comment in @wired about sabotage disrupting railways in Poland. Radio emission brings trains to a halt in several places. Who's behind unclear. Executing this sabotage is technically simple (I explain), though requires proximity. Solution: move to GSM-R.
This would be great if #Biden is actually able to pull it off. Our rail system is woefully outdated, and in poor condition. We should have the greatest #railway in the world, but we're instead stuck with nonsense from the last century. A new railway could revolutionize the way we travel and commute.
Morning all. Bore da. It's St David's Day. Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus! And what better way to celebrate than with a lovely red kite (with parallel translation!). xx
Hi all! I'm Garry, I'm a #railway engineer based in the UK specialising in the overhead line systems that supply power to #electric trains. I'm so convinced that electric rail is the future that I wrote a book about how it works - you can download it FREE at https://www.ocs4rail.com/downloads. I also post the odd #RailwayPhotos#RailwayPhotography . I'm going to be moving all my #RailwaysExplained threads over here and doing some new ones too
At last a major Labour Party promise that most of us can get behind: Labour have committed to a full-scale (re)nationalisation of the UK rail system (with some allowance for small scale focussed private services on the nationalised system).
Lobbying by rail firms seems to have finally been unable to halt the realisation that for Labour this is a major & well-supported popular policy.
Now what would be good would them to apply the same logic to their economic/fiscal policy!
I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Sigrid the Cat & Travis. They sometimes travel on the London Underground, so I thought that I would join them on their journey home to capture some photography of the rare sight of a cat on the tube.
The 55.2 metre wide and 53.3 metre high central arch of the Ballochmyle Viaduct in Ayrshire. Designed by John Miller in the 1840s, it's not only the highest railway bridge in Britain, at the time it was built, it also has the largest masonry span in the world. It was constructed as part of the Glasgow and South Western Railway connecting Glasgow, Stranraer and Carlisle, and still carries passenger and freight trains to this day.
My second photo of the piano key floor tiles on the Bakerloo line platform at Waterloo London Underground station. I was pleased to finally capture some fun photography of this overlooked feature.
Black and white version of this shot. Photography of a lady rushing to catch her train surrounded by the absolutely stunning architecture of Charles Holden. Taken at Tooting Bec London Underground station.
Fun photography of singer & musician Fiona Fey pretending to toot her Clarinet at Tooting Bec London Underground station. This has been on my photo pun list for a while, so I'm very pleased to finally get the shot.
Govia Thameslink Railway (which runs three #railway franchises) has failed to meet most (if not all) performance targets in the first year of its (new) contract.
So, of course, to ensure the firm actually does earn some performance 'bonuses' in 2024, the #Tories have lowered the targets to ensure GTR will be able to meet them & reap the financial rewards.
Yup, this is what #corruption in plain sight looks like.
Can anyone tell me about this #railway carriage? Is it a goods wagon or perhaps for transporting cattle? I'm guessing it could be 100 years old? Of be very grateful for the help of any #enthusiast who might have an idea as to its #history, use, etc.
I do enjoy watching trains travelling through dark tunnels & the art that they create. The paint palette is mainly 2 colours. The bright colour white/blue from the train's headlights, & the red from the back.
In 1880-1882, an attempt was made to dig a railway tunnel from Kent to Calais.
Using an air-powered boring machine, the Submarine Continental Railway Company and its French partner dug 3.5km under the English Channel before British politics intervened and stopped the project.
Excited to share my article on the early history of the Channel Tunnel in the Public Domain Review. It's got pictures and everything.
