The imposing south front of Linlithgow Palace seen through its outer gate. King James V and his daughter Mary, Queen of Scots were both born here, and its origins probably date back to a royal manor house built on the site in the 1100s. The graveyard at Trumpan Church, on the Isle of Skye's Waternish Peninsula, the scene of a bloody clan massacre in May 1578. The Dunmore Pineapple, one of Scotland's most remarkable buildings. Perhaps the largest stone pineapple anywhere, its top stands 45ft above the level of the walled garden to its south. Idyllic Kishorn in Wester Ross, with the mountains of the Applecross peninsula in the background. A roofline with real character at one of our favourite Scottish castles, Elcho Castle, close to the River Tay a few miles south-east of Perth. Scalloway Castle, seen in dramatic light, was built to exercise control over Shetland in 1600. Its surroundings, once sea on three sides, have changed considerably since it was built and it is now right next to Scalloway's busy harbour. The recreated crannog on Loch Tay, at the amazing Scottish Crannog Centre near Kenmore in Perthshire. It has since been sadly destroyed but has been replaced nearby. This is a type of dwelling that 2,500 years ago would have been a common sight across Scotland and Ireland. Only a short walk from the much better-known Rosslyn Chapel south of Edinburgh is the ruin of the fairy-tale Rosslyn Castle, occupying the summit of an easily defensible rocky promontory.
