Carnasserie Castle, one of the more recent historical attractions in the amazing Kilmartin Glen in Argyll. A view from the south-east of Stac Pollaidh or "Stack Polly", north of Ullapool in Wester Ross. At 2,008ft or 612m in height, this is a mountain that easily makes up in character and charm for what it lacks in stature. The north side of Balbirnie Stone Circle. The circle comprises eight stones in a partial circle some 15m in diameter and was probably erected over 4,000 years ago. The ramparts of Chesters Hill Fort in East Lothian. This Iron Age fortified village dates back some 2,000 years and is believed to have comprised a number of roundhouses occupying the fairly extensive upper area of the hill. The wonderfully triangular Caerlaverock Castle and its inner moat. Standing some seven miles south of Dumfries, it was built in the 1260s and 1270s to replace a slightly older castle whose traces can still be seen nearby. The amazing collection of sculptured medieval graveslabs in the lapidarium, originally a burial aisle, in the churchyard at Kilmartin Church in Argyll. The impressive 3.2m high Maiden Stone in Aberdeenshire. This Pictish symbol stone is thought to have been carved in the 800s. The magnificent Dunnottar Castle on the Aberdeenshire coast south of Stonehaven. A triumph of over-engineering, the Forth Bridge, often called the Forth Rail Bridge since the arrival of the Forth Road Bridge: now one of three great bridges across this part of the Firth of Forth, each built in a different century. The rocky defile guarding the entrance to the ancient fortress of Dunadd, north of Lochgilphead in Argyll. Occupied from about 500 to about 900, this was once one of the most important places in what has since become Scotland. The imposing south front of Linlithgow Palace seen through its outer gate. King James V and his daughter Mary, Queen of Scots were both born here, and its origins probably date back to a royal manor house built on the site in the 1100s. The graveyard at Trumpan Church, on the Isle of Skye's Waternish Peninsula, the scene of a bloody clan massacre in May 1578. The Dunmore Pineapple, one of Scotland's most remarkable buildings. Perhaps the largest stone pineapple anywhere, its top stands 45ft above the level of the walled garden to its south. Idyllic Kishorn in Wester Ross, with the mountains of the Applecross peninsula in the background. What was at the time the largest movable object ever made by man, the 600,000 tonne Ninian Central Platform, was built nearby in 1978. A roofline with real character at one of our favourite Scottish castles, Elcho Castle, close to the River Tay a few miles south-east of Perth. Scalloway Castle, seen in dramatic light, was built to exercise control over Shetland in 1600. Its surroundings, once sea on three sides, have changed considerably since it was built and it is now right next to Scalloway's busy harbour.
