Brig o' Doon in Alloway, Ayrshire, believed to have been built in the 1400s. It was made famous as the site of Tam o' Shanter's desperate flight from a witch in the poem by Robert Burns. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/alloway/brigodoon/index.html

The remains of Dunure Castle on the Ayrshire coast, once the main fortress of the Kennedy family but already a ruin by the mid 1700s. The castle's origins probably date back at least as far as the 1200s when a stone keep was built here. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/dunure/dunurecastle/index.html

Welp, just slathered another load of antiseptic cream on my foot. I think it is safe to say that I wouldn't be getting any subscribers based on the state of it right now.

Why does even mild walking exercise, not even jogging, result in such horrible blisters? I do everything right. Well fitting, non cheap, walking boots, cushioned socks, building up from three miles to six-even, and yet...

I tell you, all this healthy exercise will be the :flan_reaper: of me yet.

@Hellybootwader I don't know why it happens here. I always leave a thimble of whisky out for the every full moon, like my grandfather told me too.

Not even joking. A thimble of whisky out for the week folk on the windowsill every full moon, and a little bottle of it down a rabbit hole every new year's day. My grandfather swore it kept happy.

634 years ago today. King Robert II died at Dundonald Castle in Ayrshire on 19 April 1390. He began the House of Stewart/Stuart, which ruled Scotland for over two centuries before unifying the crowns of Scotland and England. Love this unusual little gushet building I came across when passing through Cumnock in Ayrshire yesterday. I particularly like its bottle-like shape.

The 55.2 metre wide and 53.3 metre high central arch of the Ballochmyle Viaduct in Ayrshire. Designed by John Miller in the 1840s, it's not only the highest railway bridge in Britain, at the time it was built, it also has the largest masonry span in the world. It was constructed as part of the Glasgow and South Western Railway connecting Glasgow, Stranraer and Carlisle, and still carries passenger and freight trains to this day.

It is one of the best preserved and most interesting of Scotland's many abbey ruins. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/maybole/crossraguel/index.html

Love this sundial which I came across on my recent trip to Culzean Castle to the southwest of Glasgow. Not only is the quality of the sculpture great, but the lichens and mosses which have colonised it over time just add a completely new layer to its appearance.

An ornate mortar created by Thomas English and Co. in 1775 on the Mortar Battery of Culzean Castle in Ayrshire, Scotland. The battery was built around 1829 to display some of the collection of old weapons amassed by the Archibald Kennedy, the 12th Earl of Cassillis. I love the decorative dolphins used to hold it at the high angle which separates a mortar from a gun (the name given to a cannon which fires more or less horizontally).

Here is the #ScottishWeather report. In the West you will have howling gaels, in the Northeast a cold front will continue to be in place, In the Northern Isles a wolf has devoured the sun leading to eternal darkness, and in Edinburgh you'll have had your tea!

If you know, you know.

There was weather happening in #Ayrshire and #Galloway, but everyone forgot about it.

The Buchanites Part Two : Flight into the Wilderness

In the second part of our wee series on the Buchanites, Elspeth encounters some serious opposition to her beliefs. After meeting Hugh White, Elspeth stayed with him in Irvine, and he let her speak to his congregation. Very quickly, Elspeth's beliefs were stirring up animosity and wrath among the people of the Northern Ayrshire town.

After the failed flight from the top of Templand Hill in Closeburn, the Buchanites were expelled from Closeburn Parish and settled in Urr Parish at Lower Auchengibbert, close to what is now largely known as Crocketford.

Here it is, the last of my wee videos about the Buchanites.

After Elspeth's passing and Hugh White's desertion, Andrew Innes became the defacto leader of the Buchanites that remained at Crocketford. For 50 long years, he lived with the secret of what had happened to Elspeth's body, while patiently waiting for her return.
