New update: Prosecutors refused to drop charges against 11-year-old #Brownsville boy who was put in #solitary confinement, may actually be bringing MORE charges against him.
Today in Labor History February 4, 1974: The Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) kidnapped Patty Hearst, granddaughter of American publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst, in Berkeley, California. One of the SLA’s demands for releasing Hearst was for her family to pay for millions of dollars’ worth of food to be given out free the poor and unhoused of the San Francisco Bay Area. The Hearst complied, with various community organizations distributing 100,000 bags of groceries at 16 sites in 4 counties, before violence brought the program to a halt. The violence occurred because the crowds were bigger than expected and workers started throwing boxes of food off of moving trucks. As a captive, Patty Hearst was held in a closet, blindfolded, with her hands tied, raped and threatened repeatedly with death. She was later offered the choice of freedom, or joining the SLA. She chose the latter. Consequently, she was later sentenced to 35 years in prison for her complicity in SLA robberies. After several years in prison, her sentence was commuted by President Carter. President Clinton pardoned her. Congressional Representative Leo Ryan was murdered by the Jim Jones cult in Guyana several weeks after collecting signatures for her release. Actor John Wayne, of all people, expressed frustration that everyone accepted the idea that Jones had brainwashed hundreds of his followers into mass suicide, but wouldn’t accept that the SLA could have brainwashed a teenage girl. After her release, Hearst went on to become an actress, appearing in several John Waters films, as well as many others.
A fifth-grader from #Brownsville ISD reported being bullied by his principal. Five days later, he was handcuffed and detained. He spent 3 days in solitary confinement.
Today, award-winning incarcerated journalist Christopher Blackwell announces that all his life's work has been wiped out by the prison communications company Securus.
I was the judge who selected Chris for his INN Nonprofit News Award this year. To know that one business profiting off incarcerated folks could decide to wipe out a respected journalist's lifelong work is infuriating. This is a shameful assault on freedom of the press
Liberals: "Wait until Trump puts you in the camps."
What are "the camps"? There are a number of basic kinds and this warning / threat / gleeful fantasy plays on the ambiguity between them:
Prison camps: a type of low security US Federal prison. The US has these already: the US has one of the largest prison systems in the world.
Labor camps: a detention facility where prisoners are forced to engage in penal labor as a form of punishment. The US has these already as part of a huge prison labor complex: the US has one of the largest prison systems in the world.
Internment camps (sometimes known as concentration camps): places where people are imprisoned in large groups without charges or the intent to file charges. The US has these already as part of our border camps: the US has one of the largest prison systems in the world.
Extermination camps: killing centers specifically used to murder people in large groups. These are the one form of camp that the US does not currently have.
So, are liberals saying that Trump is going to set up extermination camps? Even though US society is in extremely bad shape, I would expect a turn to full and complete Nazism to cause widespread popular resistance. (Maybe.)
Or are the Trump camps supposed to be forms (1-3)? In that case we know that liberals are OK with them because we have them now. People, including many leftists, are in these camps now. The liberal taunt seems to be that we missed out on getting put into the camps so far but Trump is going to do a more complete job.

Senators have the right - and responsibility - to visit federal penitentiaries and prisons. First thing this morning, I drove out to the Edmonton Institution in northeast Edmonton to learn more about conditions and protocols there. #Edmonton#yeg#EdmontonMax#SenateofCanada#prison#Alberta#Canada

Prison Labor Is Slave Labor and the Constitution Says That’s Fine
Incarcerated people work for cents on the dollar or for free to make goods you use.
The 13th Amendment, which ended slavery, left an important exception: it’s still legal to garnish wages, or more commonly, refuse to pay incarcerated people for forced labor. “As a result, incarcerated people live in slavery-like conditions,”
Ten Comrades Arrested in Police Operation Against Anarchist Newspaper in Italy #AnarchistPrisoners#Italy
"On August 8, at dawn, the public prosecutor’s office of Genoa and the Digos (antiterrorist police) of La Spezia led yet another operation of repression against the anarchist movement. Ten anarchist comrades are accused in this investigation, including five comrades from Carrara, for whom the prosecutor initially asked for detention. In addition to searches in the homes, the Anarchist Cultural Circle “Gogliardo Fiaschi”, the historic center of anarchists in Carrara, has been the subject of a descent. Magazines, books, leaflets, posters and computer supplies have been seized. The preliminary investigation judge has decided on four residential assignments with all restrictions, five house arrests with return to prison at night. One comrade is not subject to any restriction. Luigi, one of the four residential comrades had no official residence: he was therefore transferred to the Spezia prison." https://abolitionmedia.noblogs.org/post/2023/08/09/ten-comrades-arrested-in-police-operation-against-anarchist-newspaper-in-italy/

Despite Gov. Kemp's interest in targeting gang-related violence, he seems to misunderstand how it works and how he's exacerbating it.
