When searching for an informative link on this law, most of the search hits I got were from, to put it mildly, organizations I disagree with. Use the tools you have, because the other side definitely will.
@peterdrake And abolish the Senate while we’re at it!
My concern is the converse, actually. I’m afraid when people see how weirdly RCV can behave, they’ll paint all voting reform with that brush. No one wants to be Charlie missing the football again. I could go on about all of RCV’s shortcomings compared to many other voting methods, but I should probably just write a paper or blog about it. This one does a good job summarizing some of the key points, though:
How is #ORpol going to legalize ebikes for kids, before the earth catches fire, while only getting about half of a session into every two years? Do we need to do more of this stuff by ballot initiative?
Now, after scandals involving their use of hotel rooms and out-of-state private facilities, state officials have landed on a new — but still trouble-ridden — approach: They are paying a #religiousnonprofit more than 100 times the amount they pay foster care parents to watch children in unregulated short-term rental homes.
@ryanvgates the bike helmets thing just really sums-up our victim-blaming response to people being victimized by capitalism. (What's the housing equivalent of free bike helmets? Maybe the kind of smoke detectors that are almost useless even if you had a house, and our smoke detector encouragement policy discouraged people from using housing...) Simply legalizing bikes and market-rate housing would solve like 90% of the problems, it's just so hard to fit that idea into their world-view though.
@ryanvgates (...continuing the smoke detector analogy, there would have to be some other mode of living in a hotel maybe that was heavily subsidized and yet more expensive, where you were treated as a lower class and would often get run out of bed with hotels, if you simply lived in an apartment, while the hoteliers criticized your smoke detector...)
#Portland#transit users: OPAL's Bus Riders Unite! meeting is 6-8pm tonight (3rd Thurs of every month) at The Street Trust, 1259 Lloyd Center #pdx#ORpol#trimet
"The Oregon #MotorVoter (OMV) registration law took effect on January 1, 2016, making #Oregon the first state in the nation to implement automatic #voterRegistration [for drivers]" and then they mail you a ballot, but how do we get non-drivers to vote? #pdxBikes#ORpol
Regularly stock bike shops with registration forms? Send out reminders to register through the Biketown app? Seems like a tough problem to reach everyone. Thanks for raising it.

The new fear? Infill affordable housing is "Soros-ing Portland".
Listen, if you want to be an anti-Semitic piece of shit at least have the fucking guts to say it. The Nerdletta and Friends set is never gonna can it, #Portland, so white folks need to start pushing the fuck back on this weird obsession with preventing any new housing whatsoever in a growing city.
But the worst part is that these people are professing hatred for Jews, and I think you should have a good long think on why maybe white people who hate Jews are gonna hate other people.
@palkyrie Portland Neighbors Welcome and the Strong Towns groups are both pretty active and seem to be getting results. IDK what's stopping the county from building over libraries, or is it just slow?
#STARVoting is canvassing at PSU Farmers Market Sat July 29. Volunteers and signatures needed to get https://www.starvoting.org/star4or2024 on the Oregon 2024 ballot. This is the #VotingReform we need to break out of two-party games like "throwing your vote away" with simplistic outdated vote-counting methods, better than #RankChoice because in STAR, your vote always counts and the 2-step results (add & count your favorite of top-2) are simple to distribute, track, & audit. #ORpol#Portland#pdx
