Recognizing the last time you do something, is a gift. It may be sad and traumatic, or a complete non event you don't recognize until well after.

Seeing someone for the last time before they die unexpectedly is the extreme example. But what about the last time you ate at that restaurant, before it closed?

The last piggyback ride you gave your kid, just because they got too big?

The last time you re-read a favorite book?

Our lives are full of "last time" moments we never notice. #mindfullness

Today starts off with a bracingly cold shower, yet again, because our new gas hot water heater apparently has a defective blower and the pressure switch gets stuck in the closed position. The new blower arrives this afternoon and hopefully resolves the issue.

If not, things become more complicated. This is part of a home warranty claim and you don’t have a choice in the plumbing company. There will be credible arguments that they are not competent. I hope we don’t get to that point.🤞

The SEP-entry on Japanese Zen Buddhist Philosophy has been revised, https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/japanese-zen/

I'm not quite comfortable with the za-zen, shitting-meditation, but some other features and potentialities of this in-vogue phenomenon in the Western world do bother me somewhat.

I might be worried about the buddhist thought's influence and application in the modern world with it's mandatory science-based worry about the future of our planet. Oftentimes it sounds like an excuse of not taking parts and not acting, as long as "my" peace of mind prevails. This is what the marketized version 'mindfulness' may do to many practitioners, and one's own peace of mind in a turmoiled reality might sound like an immoral escape.

I respect Buddhism, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism, like other sincere and evolved religions, and of course cherish it's updated analytic presentation in the SEP.

So far the most bizarre part of #mindfullness training is the weird change in the perception of time.

#Anxiety puts you perpetually in the future. Making you feel like you're constantly falling behind. Always stressed out because your head is trying to predict your own experience 100% of the time to protect you from potential threats.

But then you take time to stop and count your things before you head out the door, and you get there with time to spare.

I also reduced my beta blocker to 1 pill/day. I'll do this until my body feels no longer totally out of control. That should be 7-9 days, then I'll start taking it every other day. My heart rate is all over the place still but as long as I sit down if I start feeling buzzy in the head, I feel like it's ok. Once the propranolol is totally out of my system I should be able to ramp my workouts up & my system won't be battling pharmaceuticals.

I want to take an 8 week #MBSR class but the ones I find are $500+. How long will it take for me to scrape that up? A year? Maybe more. I'm trying to save for when my rower dies. I know the rower is helping. What if MBSR doesn't? I've already wasted so much money on therapies that did nothing to advance my healing. But I've read a lot about #mindfullness & I'm liking what I'm reading/hearing.

Anyone have experience with a #MindfullnessBasedStressReduction?

I'm coming to the realisation that trying to live a kind, fair, and rational existence is living life on hard mode, and I wonder if it's wearing me down.

Almost everywhere I look I see raging assholes and clueless dipshits rising to the top (or already being there), and fucking things up for everyone.

My fediverse bubble being a pleasant exception to this rule, I thought I'd ask here: anyone got coping strategies, other than joining the assholes and no longer giving a fuck?

@pseudonym@mastodon.online avatar

@xahteiwi first off, you are not alone. You are not crazy.

For practical advice, I suggest mindfulness, kindness, and connection.

Your thoughts aren't facts, and ultimately, your inner life and behavior are all you can really control.

So use those levers.

It's difficult, and you've identified the problem.

Breathe.

Take joy in moments, no matter how small or large.

Go for a walk in a forest, or wherever recharges you.

Death Always Comes Ready Or Not!

We laugh at it, do good things to protect ourselves from it and avoid things that remind us of our animal nature. Still, we all know that we are going to die, no matter how hard we try not to think about it. In fact, this friction between knowing and running away from what we know will be with us for the rest of our lives.

I do understand the need for more and better technology!

For every incurable disease, we need new technology to cure it. For every landfill filled with waste, we need new technology to recycle and decontaminate it. Etc

What we don’t need, is technology that’s wasteful, harmful and only focusing on shareholder value! We must be mindful about it and use it for good!
