「 The billions of dollars invested and the breathless hype around a half-baked concept led to thousands — if not tens of thousands — of people losing their jobs 」
「 The company has even stopped pitching the Metaverse to advertisers, despite spending more than $100 billion in research and development on its mission to be "Metaverse first." While Zuckerberg may suggest that developing games for the Quest headsets is some sort of investment, the writing is on the wall: Meta is done with the Metaverse 」 #Metaverse#Meta#zuckerberg
「 It should also be the cause for some serious reflection among the venture-capital community, which recklessly followed Zuckerberg into blowing billions of dollars on a hype cycle founded on the flimsiest possible press-release language. In a just world, Mark Zuckerberg should be fired as CEO of Meta (in the real world, this is actually impossible) 」 #Metaverse#Meta#Zuckerberg
「 #Zuckerberg misled everyone, burned tens of billions of dollars, convinced an industry of followers to submit to his quixotic obsession, and then killed it the second that another idea started to interest Wall Street. There is no reason that a man who has overseen the layoffs of tens of thousands of people should run a major company. There is no future for #Meta with Mark Zuckerberg at the helm: It will stagnate, and then it will die and follow the #Metaverse into the proverbial grave 」
I don't think that the idea behind the #metaverse is dead. #Gaming industry is huge and highly profitable, and the only thing missing is a smaller and cheaper headset.
The decision of #Zuckerberg and his company #Meta to focus on the #Ai in the meantime, just shows they're desperate for growth and profit ASAP.
Even though #virtualReality will bring many troubles with it's widespread usage (#addiction and #asocial behavior first comes to mind), I think it's inevitable.

Social media is kinda melting down right now. Except Mastodon... Mastodon is doing fine...
#SGGQA 298: The Calm Before Google I/O, Twitter Blue is a Flop, Bluesky off to slow start, Facebook Pages Hacked
Still reading and hearing takes that Mastodon has “failed” as a Twitter alternative. Listen, it’s ok if it doesn’t work for someone—unlike Twitter, I think Mastodon requires more effort and cultivation to produce an experience that feels meaningful. It’s been worth it for me. But there is definitely a smell of…not sour grapes but people making broad assumptions based on their own experience while ignoring millions of other people. Will Mastodon top 100 million? Who knows. Who cares?

We're going to be wiped out or #Meta will bring their #ActivityPub compatible #Twitter replacement that's actually what the majority of people want. #Mastodon
“#Layoffs are definitely a confession of poor #management," Jeffrey Pfeffer, a professor of organizational behavior at Stanford Business School, told me. His reasoning: Research shows that generally, layoffs don't improve a company's fortunes. Quite the opposite: They don't reliably raise a company's profits or stock price, but they do reliably reduce remaining employees' morale, commitment, productivity, and trust.
“When Mark Zuckerberg declared 2023 "the Year of Efficiency" for #Facebook parent #Meta Platforms, several questions seemed unavoidable: Aren't companies supposed to be efficient every year? If this is the Year of Efficiency, what were all the previous years the Years of Squandering?”
A few words about Mapilio, the new alternative to Mapillary and KartaView (competitors(?) to Google Street View), but mostly on how to download the images published there
Finally, the #FTC intends to impose real #privacy rules on #Meta: New services or service changes only after an independent privacy evaluation shows that they are compliant. No commercial use of data harvested from #underage users.
I am conflicted by @mozilla content policies announcement. I appreciate that a lot of thought went into it, but I think they could be used to eliminate a lot of necessary social tension.
An example is their violent content policy: “Users may not share content that depicts abuse of humans or animals, or that includes excessively gory or violent imagery that…can disturb other users.“
I am a lifelong #vegetarian and I’ve been #vegan for 20 years. Photos of meat/dead animals disturb me. Am I to assume then that sharing this content will be banned in that instance? And if not, why not?
Also, nothing on who will be #moderating content. Is it volunteers, #Mozilla staff, external contractors??
Mozilla is a very well-funded nonprofit with almost $75 million dollars in assets. If any organization can scale a #fediverse#Mastodon instance, it is them. Yet even they are replicating the #Twitter#Facebook#Meta model of outsourcing moderation.
Outsourced moderators will be denied Mozilla's famous world-class benefit packages AND all the rights non-contracted workers are entitled to. Thanks to Prop 22, they could even be gig workers or perma-temps.
Here is the list of actions the FTC has proposed against #Meta.
I don't think Meta will win over the public fighting those, most are pretty basic privacy related actions. I mean how do they want to publicly defend the monetizing of data of children?
Are you new here, and trying to find your way around? Here are a couple of tips to help you build your community (bear in mind that there still aren't a lot of us here!):
Follow hashtags. This is somewhat similar to creating groups on the bird site, but better because you're not adding folks who may not wish to be part of the group. You're literally just following posts that have included a particular hashtag. They will show up in your local feed.
Note: If you're using an app, this may not be easy to do. The official app allows you to follow hashtags, but #Meta doesn't. I use Meta, so whenever I want to follow a new hashtag, I just load the Masto website.
".. the FTC has proposed changes to the 2020 order that would prohibit Facebook owner #Meta from launching new products on any of its platforms without procuring written FTC compliance confirmation.."
