"#Mastodon is failing" so hard that #Fediverse just crossed 4mln monthly active accounts (based on the-federation.info). :blobcatgiggle:
This is already slightly more than Nov and Dec #TwitterMigration waves' peaks. And it is still going up.
What I find particularly important is that it seems like a lot of this is not new accounts, but people returning to accounts created before and then left unused.
I expect this to be a more resilient kind of growth. Less of a drop after it peaks.
I love that Mastodon has that thing where someone interacts with you, then you check them out, find out they're cool, follow them, and check out their boosts and find out they follow cool people so now you follow those other cool people as well and now you follow a whole bunch more cool people.
Meta joining the Fediverse is like AOL joining the internet: something that will bring a mass amount of people in, create some friction, but ultimately make the net better as more people federating on #Mastodon, #kbin, #lemmy, #pixelfed and other parts of the Fediverse make open protocols that much stronger.
I'm getting really tired of trying to run away from big tech, only to be ensnared again by the greed and/or naivety of sites who ultimately cave to the whims of big tech....
He’s here! The prototype, anyway. He’s big, squishy, and friend-shaped. We’ll try to make him as affordable as possible. You’ll have to wait a couple more months to get one, but we might open pre-orders relatively soon.
This whole federating with Threads thing has never made any sense and now we see it is very likely they have just been playing us the whole time. Let's stop falling for this nonsense and get back to building great open social media.
Preparatevi all'aggiornamento!
Bringing this long thread over from Universeodon...the first one will be visible, so click through for the rest.
🧵 I know a lot of you have not read any #holocaust memoirs. Last night I finished up a bound volume of "An Interrupted Life" & "Letters from Westerbork" which were the diary & correspondence of Etty Hillesum, who lived in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation.
In the first half of her diary she tells us of her wild romp through the men of her circle of friends. Anyone who thinks the US in the 60s invented sex is...wrong, lol.
Then Westerbork: a transit camp, a holding place while you waited to be shipped to the concentration camps.
In this thread I'm going to post some of the things I underlined for various reasons in the book.
Not everything is profound. It's just things I wanted to think about. I invite you to think about them with me.
If you see an account named thegx.ca/forum (thegx@…) pop up on your servers please suspend it. Some bastard has been setting up spam accounts all over. I’ve lost count of how many I’ve blocked and it’s getting annoying.
Constantly hearing ”got tired of Mastodon’s technicalities, Bluesky is simple and amazing”.
How we could design Mastodon to be more simple and have less technical-feel to it? UI is one thing, but that will not cut it all. I have probably said this before, but I am starting to believe no matter what we do we can’t ”win”. The narrative might need to change. 🤷♂️
The first beta of #Mastodon 4.2.0 is now available for testing! There are too many improvements to count. See the extensive changelog and upgrade instructions here:
I've come to the conclusion that the strictly reverse chronological timeline enforced by #Mastodon is a horrible idea, and the more I use Mastodon the more I'm convinced of this. Before anyone jumps me for misunderstanding my complaint, I'm not going to advocate for an algorithmic-manipulated timeline: I'll argue in favor of something completely different.

I see a lot of people sharing blanket condemnations of all of those who still remain on #Twitter / #Xitter , and I need you to slow down a bit.
Sure, in some cases this is justified - journalists should really know better. But there are a lot of communities on that platform that are vital to many people's well-being that haven't been replicated on the #Fediverse or elsewhere. Take #BlackTwitter - while #BlackMastodon is growing, it's still minuscule in comparison. The number of Twitter users in #Pakistan is staggering, while they are only a handful on #Mastodon . And so on, and so forth. Twitter was a lifeline to many marginalized people, and it still is - even though it gets worse every day - and we need to recognize this.
As a white European guy, it was easy for me to walk away from Twitter (I still have an account there, but I only post "you should go to Mastodon" stuff these days) - since it is easy to find people of a similar background to interact with. But this is NOT true for everyone!
So I'd like everyone to show a bit less contempt to the remaining Twitter users in general, and put some more effort in how to make the Fediverse friendlier to marginalized voices. Because there is MUCH work to be done here!
We're going to make a #Mastodon plushie and it's going to be very cute! I'll share more details once the prototype is done—the concept art is very promising and our partners at FRESH have a good track record of making plushies 🙂
Unlike #Twitter, this place isn’t set up as a race for RTs & likes & feels more like an ongoing conversation. Engagement is high & on the whole, there’s less outrage & more thoughtful content. I’ve been enjoying the chance to get to meet interesting new folks.
Tip: Start with an #introduction & share your interests. @feditips is a helpful follow to get oriented too.
For all the people who say ”I had to select a server, it was so complicated to sign up to Mastodon. On Bluesky it was easy” - how are these two different logic-wise? I mean what the hell?
Let's say the worst case scenario happens with kbin and Meta. What are some alternate sites/instances that would be more resilient to enshitification?
I'm getting really tired of trying to run away from big tech, only to be ensnared again by the greed and/or naivety of sites who ultimately cave to the whims of big tech....
