in hindsight it may have been a mistake to google "gimp mask" to try to figure out how to do a layer mask in gimp, the free and open source equivalent of photoshop
I got up very early to photograph the sunrise from the local mountain top (Glander, 1883 m). It was a hard hike up in the dark to get there in time. Unfortunately it was very hazy and the sunrise was behind clouds, but the view was still worth it.
I've been playing with #GIMP recently, and here is one I am particularly proud of. This photo was a 6 second exposure of the moonrise over a river near #brisbane, and then I played with Simple Linear Interpretive Clustering Algorithms to cluster the image according to average pixel colour in segments of a given area using k-means clustering.
Blender HQ is hosting the annual #Gimp developer workshop "Wilber Week". And two #Inkscape developers joined. Pictures are of today's session on aligning the color pipeline between our apps. #b3d
The #WebP buffer overflow bug that caused all the major browsers to issue patches earlier this week (e.g. #Firefox 117.0.1) also affects applications built with Electron. #1Password issued an update today for their Mac build.
The CVE affects the underlying webp library, not just web browsers, so this will be an ongoing issue.
"Who uses #libwebp?
"There are a lot of applications that use libwebp to render WebP images, I already mentioned a few of them, but some of the others that I know include: #Affinity (the design software), #Gimp, Inkscape [not according to Martin Owens, see comment below], #LibreOffice, #Telegram, #Thunderbird (now patched), #ffmpeg, and many, many #Android applications as well as cross-platform apps built with #Flutter."
I thought it was time to show more of my passion for abstract art so I made this one this morning. Another attempt to make #DigitalArt that doesn't look digital using #ArtRage and #Gimp.
I thought I'd change things up a little - instead of implementing oddball image formats, I tried implementing a more popular palette format!
Just submitted a patch to let #GIMP users load Adobe Swatch Exchange palette files. The format is used to share palettes between various Adobe applications - perhaps soon they can share with GIMP too.😜
Does anyone have a specification for 32bpp SunRaster images (.im32)? There's a 13 year old request for #GIMP to export .im32 (loading is already supported).
The code to implement is very simple - the problem is that .im32 images are rendered differently by every image viewer I've checked. :)
I think the conflict is whether the extra byte represents transparency or just padding, which is why a specification would be helpful. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/318
A two frame composite of the Milky Way and my kitty "Ding" waiting for me to join him in the freezing cold tent. Ding loved to go camping with me. I sure do missing Schrödinger, the Kampin' Kitty 💔. (Photo: Massacre Rim, International Dark Sky Sanctuary, Nevada (5/23/2020).)
Just for the record.
Here is the same animation of #Phobos transiting the Sun at 6:29 AM on Sol 1056, as observed by #Perseverance in Jezero Crater, Mars, this time without missing frames, processed, and hot pixels manually removed from the disk of the Sun using #GIMP's healing tool.

This is a #watercolor painting I did a few months ago but hadn't share, until we bought a scanner here in #Greece. It arrived today, I scanned the painting under #Debian#Linux without any issues (or additional drivers), and I fixed the colors with #Gimp. It's the first time I use The Gimp for my paintings (I've used The Gimp on and off since its inception, but not for my artworks). I've been using #Photoshop instead for my collages and paintings, but I stopped my #Adobe subscription a few months ago. It's all #Foss now.
