FFS! Opting out of #Dropbox selling my data takes 3 steps! All I wanted was secure, synced storage. The "Dropbox sells your data to OpenAI as training set" debacle makes me seriously consider other options. And I've been a paying customer for 10 years. This is unacceptable.
If you use #Dropbox and you're not a fan of being opted-in to AI, you certainly might want to go to your settings on the Dropbox website and make sure to de-select "Third-party AI", under your "Account" settings.
At least within Apple's Fortified Orchard, you won't find this setting on your phone. You won't encounter this setting in the little menu-bar widget.
You've gotta drag your brain & your cursor all the way to the website and deal with the expanded set of settings there.
Also! There are many places where you are welcome to opine about not using Dropbox, about the many fine and higher-stakes DIY alternatives, and/or about not using Apple.
A reply to this message is not one of those places, neighbor.
Are you using Dropbox cloud storage? You do not want 3rd party AI technology partners to have access to your Dropbox files? Flip this switch, which is on by default. Go to web->account-> settings- 3rd party AI. Please turn it off. Please boost so everyone know how bad this move is … 😡
Manual setup was a bit of a pain (they want you to use docker, of course) but well worth it! It does all the collaborative google drive-y things I need it to.
I've been wavering on choosing a cloud provider to sync my data with. I really was hoping to use #ProtonDrive, but I really need a #Linux client. I was using #Google dive, but I really do not like how their system works.
So, I am going to go with #Dropbox I am not particularly excited to use them, but just yesterday, my wife needed an ID which she did not have. If my data was in the #cloud, I could have just shown it on the phone.
Question for anyone using #Scribd on #Ipad - I’m new to using the program, don’t have any other computer, and although I do have a #Dropbox account, ouch - I’m also living on a pension, and I’m not sure I can stretch to the charge per month to back up my writing from Scribd unless I absolutely HAVE to. Suggestions and boosts very welcome.
Tuesday, November 7th, will see a large number of elections across the United States from governors to school boards to ballot issues. Every single election and vote matters.
Please check this excellent compilation from Bolts Mag and make a plan to vote if one of these elections is yours.
All I use DropBox for is syncing a small number of files between 2 laptops and 2 phones and mostly as an easy way to send photos to the laptops from the phones. Their current free plan only allows 3 devices.
New issue found: Once you get a bunch of systems on the same network using DropBox locally, the amount of UDP broadcast traffic from each to port 17500 can overwhelm equipment, and an Asterisk PBX listening on ports 10,000 to 30,000. Just setup a local file server/share, please. #dropbox#asterisk
Dropbox Users. If you have Dropbox and have 2 factor turned on, just a warning, if you ever lose access to the email that is associated with Dropbox, then you could lose all access to your files. The reason is because Dropbox uses your email to send you the 2 factor code to enter. This has happened to my friend. Dropbox does set up 10 emergency 2 factor codes that will always work that you can write down and keep. The thing is that most people do not know about these codes. To access and write down your codes, go to the Dropbox website and log in, go to settings, then go to security. In there you will find your personal 2 factor codes that you can use each one one time in case of an emergency. And please do not store these codes in your Dropbox, because if you can not access your Dropbox, then you will not be able to access these codes! Store them somewhere safe outside of Dropbox so you can easily access them if needed. #Dropbox#TwoFactor#Codes#Website#security
@gvwilson I’m in the Uk so thankfully am opted out to this new ai, but I did take the time to contact support on how awful having anyone opted in by default was and how it would make me reconsider my subscription; they just fed me back this article and how it’s ok because it only a shared it with them for 30 days. And that I should give feedback via their community board (https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Dropbox-AI/Dropbox-AI-What-you-need-to-know/td-p/688308) - as if anyone In #Dropbox would pay attention to that.
I have about 26,000 photos that are taking forever to sync from scratch. I'm also not seeing a lot of .MOV files for live images for a lot of these images - worrying!
The Photos folder has reserved ~106 GB but actual size on disk is only ~85 MB so far. Apple's estimate on Photos storage on iCloud is about ~150 GB, so that's yet another discrepancy that worries me.
I've used #Dropbox in the past, then moved across to #OneDrive and still use that for backing up to this day - even on #iPhone
I don't really like that Apple don't just give you folder-structured access to the #iCloud directory. It obfuscates a lot of what is happening, when it's totally unnecessary.
Again, good luck. I hope you manage to secure all your photos and videos and organise them how you want.
