👉 Monday: Relax! Apple was not indefinitely storing your deleted media in iCloud, as it turns out this issue was caused by an iOS bug and isn't an iCloud related issue.
This is a useful heads-up e.g. if you’re on a company Mac and trying to keep your work & personal data separate. Don’t trust iCloud Keychain to stay off. Create a work account. (And yeah, it sucks that Apple sucks at this.) #Apple#iCloud https://lapcatsoftware.com/articles/2024/5/4.html
Reisetauglich: Geteilte iCloud-Fotomediathek vereint gemeinsam aufgenommene Fotos
I wish #apple would make a new Time Capsule device as an offline companion of #icloud. It would keep a local copy of your whole iCloud and your Apple devices would use local copies if internet is slow or gone. That would be great for iCloud dependant people.
Recently I was adjusting my son’s parental control on his tablet, and thought ya know I guess I really should just allow my iCloud.com email (that I don’t really use) to make me more findable for messsages and FaceTime.
Not even 47 hours later I r had four scams texted to me and randomly added to some crazy group. Uh no. We’l just leave that stupid thing turned off now. Yikes.
Look on the bright side: if #Apple gets broken up, maybe #iCloud will finally get torn away from Eddie Cue and put in the hands of someone who actually gives a shit about it.
And no, I’m not interesting in a discussion if you think Cue has been anything but disastrous for one of Apple’s most fundamental and essential services.
"Apple was secretly sharing data with law enforcement agencies and left a security backdoor [in iPhones] that may have been exploited by the Chinese government for political repression."
How to protect your privacy on iPhone
Turn on "Advanced Data Protection"
Turn off iCloud services for apps that don't need it like Mail and Calendar
Turn off Location Services for apps that don't need it
🖼️ Privacy-Focused Google Photos Alternative 'Ente' is Now Open-Source
➥ It's FOSS
「 The developers have completely open-sourced their server source code for everyone to access.
Doing that also resulted in merging all of Ente's code into a single repository that can be cloned to develop robust alternatives to the likes of Google Photos and Apple icloud 」
Received a new #phishing or scam email. I've never had an #iCloud account or #Apple product or account. Ever.
"Your iCloud storage has reached its limit. All updates to photos, videos, and iCloud Drive have been halted. Immediate action is required to prevent data loss."
Be careful out there if you do have an iCloud account and get these emails.
Looking at the code of the email, outbound links going to 420round dot com. #infosec
Since I was working on Photo Stream at the time, I remember when the decision was made to budget 5 GB to each device sold for iCloud storage (excluding Photo Stream storage—that was free). We nodded along since it was only for email, contacts, and calendar at the time.
Then Apple launched with iCloud backup, and the free tier stayed at 5 GB.
Then Apple added iCloud photos, and…still 5 GB.
We’re now a decade later and…it’s still 5 GB. It’s damn near comedic at this point.
I recently tried to share a calendar tied to an iCloud account with someone who doesn’t use Apple products. They weren’t able to subscribe. We didn’t dive into full-on troubleshoot and solution mode.
Is there some voodoo that needs to happen?
Create calendar
Share calendar (results in email with link)
Recipient follows link…
They received an error saying they couldn’t subscribe to the calendar.
I feel like I was able to do this before without problem.
Reasons not to use #iCloud for syncing between devices: Duplicated a file on the iPad. Go to the Mac. File not synced. Indeed, the source file from 2021 is also not synced. #Apple, I am very dissatisfied.
iMessage quantum security arrives with iOS 17.4 - @9to5Mac
This would have been the perfect article to remind people that all of this E2EE doesn’t matter if you backup your iMessages in iCloud, where they will be backed up clear-text to Apple/NSA, unless both parties turn on Advanced Data Protection
