Heh. I took the plunge and customized a new PC at #MicroCenter (they’re building it for me). This is how they list the PC case and Windows license.

Windows is a “symptom” and there is no security 😄

(Means I didn’t ask for any security software)

Thought of another place a #PrivateAI might be useful: Locally scanning our email spam, phishing, etc.

Examples: Is the sender’s domain from the actual company, or a lie or spoof?

Is that ‘customer support’ number legit, or a scam center?

Does that supposed anti-virus company ACTUALLY need my social security number to clean my computer? 😄

Stuff like that. But scanned locally, not shared with brokers, maybe anonymously checked against an open source repository. I dunno.

Question for folks:

It turns out that players have been able to download the major expansion early. Again.

(it was scheduled for next week)

All they had to do was change the clock on their PlayStation to next week’s date, and Sony‘s servers gave them the expansion.

Does that sound like has anyone employed in system security? Cuz to this layperson it sure doesn’t.

#DoorDash just started making everyone's accounts

*and purchases public by default

Opt out, not in. Likely because they company is run by sociopaths.

You might want to shut this off in your profile. If you know anyone who works in management at DoorDash, consider tossing them into your nearest black hole. #privacy

She has a real good example of how algorithms on platforms like Instagram not only try to make you addicted but also divide us even more

I real LOVE the fact Mastodon and most of the Fediverse software avoids this all together

A girl explaining comments shown on an example Instagram posts. It looks at your age, gender, interests and serves comments based on that.

chartier,
@chartier@toot.cafe avatar

@mekkaokereke @stux I see your point to an extent but there’s still a big difference here.

Those are admins using Mastodon as it was designed and in line with their values. It’s part of the core point of Masto’s defederated architecture.

It isn’t an algorithm tuned to create maximum outrage bait and making weird decisions on what content to show each user based on psychological manipulation. It’s just humans deciding on content based on their choices and instance users making THEIR choices.

chartier,
@chartier@toot.cafe avatar

@LALegault @mekkaokereke @stux I haven’t looked at instances in a while but back when I was shopping around, it seemed like most I saw and were recommended to me all had a CoC that outlined at least broad top-level values. No hate, no -isms, etc.

The instance description usually has a simple summary of those values in the description section. But they don’t get into the weeds on every possible topic.

@ivory Is it possible to follow local timelines of other public servers? I can’t find it on iPhone.

@chartier@toot.cafe avatar

Our cattle dog is such a smart little dork.

Of course he picked up on the act and sound of a laptop closing, and that could mean it’s playtime!

But he also now perks up at the sound of pressing the side button on my iPhone or iPad to mean the same thing. Doesn’t see it, only hears it, and that also could mean it’s go-time. 😄 #dogs

Who decided that all (gaming) PCs will have their clear panel on the left side forever, with no option for the right side, basically forcing you to keep your PC to your right if you have monkey brain and like looking at RGB stuff?

What committee is responsible?

What gives you the right??

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE

Thought of something I’d like in #AppleMusic that I guess #AI could probably provide: Sometimes I want to play specific types or styles of music from an artist or genre.

Example: I really like Polyphia’s instrumental tracks, but I’m usually not into the collabs they do with vocalists. I like all of AJR’s music, but sometimes I only want to hear their songs that lean electronic or use samples.

Hey Siri, play instrumental tracks by Polyphia.

Does that sound feasible? #Apple

Never mind the dumpster fire of a human being that is #ElonMusk, why on earth do people still buy anything from #Tesla?

We have years of evidence that the company is an absolute joke. Incompetence wrapped in hubris, thoroughly marinated with not just a lack of care, but unchecked disdain for its customers.

It doesn’t include driving on “uneven surfaces.”

“Who was asking for the iPad Pro to get thinner?”

Setting aside the fact our tech has been getting smaller and thinner for decades so I don’t really understand this question, I think the larger benefit is weight.

As someone who has been using a 13” iPad Pro for ~ 80% of my daily work and play for years, every fraction of an ounce they can shed is welcome, especially since this device is designed to be held; it doesn’t just sit on a surface like a laptop.

#Apple #iPad #iPadPro

chartier,
@chartier@toot.cafe avatar

@gedeonm I imagine it’s a tough scenario to design for because it has so many different use cases. Because it can sit on a surface or be held, there are conflicting interests.

@craiggrannell I used it handheld yesterday to read a quite long article. It isn’t a massive difference from my previous 12.9 M1, but it’s noticeable. Subtle, but welcome.

I wish I didn’t feel like Apple was one of the very few, sometimes only, major tech companies trying to build with privacy in mind. Yes, I get there are arguably places it may or can erode that design. They’re besides the point for now.

And granted, I generally like Apple’s products. But in some ways I also feel like I’m stuck here; I truly wish more of its peers valued our privacy.

Anyone have opinions on a simple iPad + iPhone task app that:

  • syncs via iCloud? That is a must
  • Is neither Things 3 nor Reminders (I already use them)

Doesn't need to be super feature rich. It's just a place to store video game stuff I want to do (like weapon rolls to chase in )

Park in the (almost full) cell phone waiting lot to pick up my wife from Ohare. Windows are down, quiet music playing

Woman walks up with clipboard

“Are you a registered voter in Illinois?”

Uh oh. Whelp, let’s see where this goes

“I am”

“Want to sign my petition to get RFK Jr on the ballot for November?”

“Absolutely not.”

As she wanders away: “Ah, I was wondering.. since I saw that ‘Science’ badge on the back of your car.”

What did she mean?? Was that supposed to be an insult? 😆
