Microsoft, quietly, has published a guide on how to download and install Linux.

No... Seriously... It is not a joke...

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/linux/install

The article was published September 29, 2023 (9 days ago).

The guide provides every option available, too. Starting with using their Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), to using a Virtual Machine, and even on "Bare Metal" alongside Windows.

That's right, Microsoft now tells you how to dual-boot Linux. 🤯

Breaking the phone you plan to demo with is always fun.

Fixing it, even more so!
Just need a keyboard and run 1 command.

2 hours to go https://debconf23.debconf.org/talks/61-the-year-of-linux-on-desktopwmobile/

I'm a bit concerned about the frequent power losses at the hotel though :D

I'll add image descriptions later, need to work on my slides :P
and need to go for a swim!

Here is my new GNU/Linux distribution guide about Debian KDE 12, the right GNU/Linux distribution for professional digital painting in 2024! Also about three major problems with GNU/Linux distros that will drive away all professional artists, IMO, and how I got kicked out of the Fedora KDE ecosystem with F40, which imposed Plasma6 and Wayland. I hope it helps other artists here!

Finally putting my x230 to rest, the last sudo poweroff. Hardware is failing beyond the point that makes continuing to repair it worthwhile.

On this laptop I deployed nearly 60 servers (most for at risk groups), 12 tech art projects (solo & collab, some toured worldwide), & gave many lectures & workshops.

If there was ever a loyal and electric steed, it was this x230. It ran #Debian & was good.

I bought it in 2015, for EUR145 on the German eBay, 2nd hand.

You know what irks me the most about this change to pip behaviour in Debian. Linux is such a foot gun by design, you can do anything you want with usually no resistance or warning by the distro or kernel but this is where the line is drawn??

It's not like you couldn't have gone the other way and wrap system python packages into their venv.

Let people do unwise things, there are so many better defaults they could have chosen (redirect to local user with warning).

How does yours look like? 😎

25 years ago today, Google was founded.
On the same day, I wiped Windows 98 off my computer, believing that Debian Linux (which I had been using for a while but still kept Windows on another partition) could do everything I had been doing with Windows until then.

Since that day, many installations of Linux, *BSD, MacOS have graced my computers, but Windows has remained, on a few occasions, only an occasional (unwelcome) guest.

In the spirit of a typical support group phrase, I can joyfully say:
'Hello, I'm Stefano, and I haven't been using Windows as my primary operating system for 25 years.'

Please boost and share your experience!

Sid users: how often do you dist-upgrade?

I see that base packages like the kernel are held back, but also heard that some packages with dubious state stay there as something of a staging area. What is the recommendation here?

I don't like it when this happens, but I must admit that APT https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/ubuntu-lts-debian-linux-apt-command-examples/ is very easy to use. #linux #debian #ubuntu #sysadmin #devops

Do you guys use #Flatpak on your #Linux system? 🙂
Currently, I do not need external software - everything I need is in the repo or available in a external repo (#Debian)
Curious to know how your experiences are with #Flatpaks (Or #AppImages for that matter)

It looks like there is no easy way to export one's account settings from Thunderbird, to import them onto another machine, without also moving the whole message store.

I just want to export settings, import them on the new machine, and then download messages from my mail server.

It looks like I can do it by faffing around with rsync and rsync exclusion rules, but am I missing something?

#Thunderbird #Linux #Debian?

As much as I want to fully go with my laptop as a desktop, I find things that simply are not working right... especially the usage of more than one vm - let alone a full windows vm (For dev stuff and scripting).

At this point I'll just suck it up and use my Ryzen system.

Sometimes the path of least resistance is to simply use what works for all edge cases - even though the power usage is higher.

Currently dual booting #Windows and #Debian - each system serves it's purpose.

Just a small rant

I just love #Debian with #Xfce :debian:
It's simple, stable and get's out of my way
It might not be the most eye candy desktop - but I need it to just work.

"It just works" (TM) 😎

Hey #Linux peeps, can someone tell me why I get prompted for a username and password on #Github when trying to clone a repository on my brand new headless #Debian installation?

I'm just trying to install #FancyMOTD on my server. I do NOT get any such prompts when I tried it just now on my laptop running Manjaro, or earlier on Ubuntu Server.

Is this a Debian thing?

EDIT: Thanks for all the help, everyone. It was a dang typo.

This is why people like GUIs and clicking on shit, BTW.

Any insights how #fedora and #debian will handle the license change in #vagrant? I don't hope they would include BSL code in the distro, so… freeze the version of vagrant before the license change? Any prominent OSS fork already? #opensource #osi #license #freesoftware

I don't know why, but I've never liked #ubuntu. #Debian, yes. So it's not about the ecosystem (apt) or anything, there's just something in Ubuntu that I do not like.

As a non-gamer: how difficult and complex is it to start (with ?) on Linux in order to play just one game for a couple of days that looks interesting to me?

I don't want to pay for monthly services, I don't want to be locked in.
