As a non-gamer: how difficult and complex is it to start (with #Steam?) on #Debian Linux in order to play just one game for a couple of days that looks interesting to me?

I don't want to pay for monthly services, I don't want to be locked in.

Installing #Steam on #Debian stable is not a straight-forward experience for me:

Maybe the idea of losing a couple of hours to a computer game was a stupid idea in the first place. 🤷

@publicvoit I always install steam through flatpak. sudo apt install flatpak, flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub <https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo> then flatpak install steam.

It'll install 32bit binaries without needing to enable them on your system, and it'll just work without dependency issues.

@tripplehelix Thanks for that.

However, I've installed it via Steam but I can't start it. Have a look at the URL I've posted.

@publicvoit If you log out and back in, you'll get the environment variable's sorted.

just run flatpak run com.valvesoftware.Steam or open it from your system menu, not sure why you added the disable compositing mode option.

Also steam takes a minute to load up, the terminal will show warning messages, of which can be ignored.

@publicvoit We good?

@tripplehelix Sorry, what do you mean?

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@publicvoit Did it work?

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@tripplehelix Oh, I see.

I don't know. This host rarely reboots because it's also my 24/7 server. I still need to plan for that reboot and this game task is one of the lowest priorities for me right now.

@tripplehelix I did a reboot and used your commands and I still get the same error:

bwrap: Can't make symlink at /home/vk/.local: File exists

@publicvoit .local is a directory, what's it trying to write in there that it can't? What version of Linux and Debian are you running?

It seems to be a regular issue when searching online. Never come across it myself, lots of people posting workarounds that aren't good ideas.

@tripplehelix ~/.local is a standard configuration sub-hierarchy with lots of files from misc tools. I certainly won't delete it.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@tripplehelix 58GB with 5258 files are within ~/.local/ 😉

tripplehelix,
@tripplehelix@fosstodon.org avatar

@publicvoit 58GB?! Why?

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@tripplehelix Among others, GTP4All is using that sub hierarchy to store its rather large LLM files I'm using. 😉

mikagrml,

@publicvoit forgot dpkg --add-architecture i386 ; apt update?

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@mikagrml Ah. Did not know that.

Is that something I actually should do (I assume it's some kind of leaving x86/64bit path for this package) or try to continue installing via Flatpak in order to have some kind of containerization? 🤔

@publicvoit @mikagrml steam requires 32bit support so if you've not specifically enabled it you'll need to :)

@publicvoit Awesome game, you'll definitely enjoy it!

TheSecondVariation,

For Windows games you have to enable compatibility mode.
