City of #CapeTown#DataScience is (still) looking for a frontend dev! Our work is in service of millions of residents of the Best City in the World*, and you can be part of that!
Hundreds of newspapers and magazines from all over the world for free on your digital device using the #pressreader app and by becoming a member of your local public library (in my case the #Munich library, which gives me the magazines in the picture, the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and many, many more). Oh. And also access to https://statista.de and many more things. https://muenchner-stadtbibliothek.de/digitale-angebote#SupportYourLibrary
@jwildeboer yes I've been accessing them through our #CapeTown library - an amazing benefit and access to quality news. I especially like the commenting and voting on articles.
Seems you must take your own material with, for having say pockets fixed. This was not even told to me when I brought the item in and got the price, after discussing what needs to be done. I only found out when collecting it. Where do I buy material? I'm told I can get it near the Castle in city centre! It's like taking your car for a service but you must provide the oil, spark plugs, air filter, etc. I'm astounded and will have to find a proper tailor now with material. #capetown#SouthAfrica
Over the past year a Cape eagle-owl has become a regular visitor to our garden, softly hooting in the evenings and early hours. Occasionally another owl will join. The owl regularly sits in the tree a few meters outside the window beside my wife's workstation.
For her birthday, the kids and I surprised her with this lovely owl box that we'll install in the owls' favourite tree. Hopefully we can attract a breeding pair over the next year.
We think the owls enjoy the garden snacks – the trees attract plenty of smaller birds, and we know the soil hosts several shrew families. The pond also has fewer frogs than in the past...
Google Maps will dodge South Africa’s crime hotspots: Sadly it is needed as tourists have been misdirected
Google Maps will avoid directing motorists through crime hotspots, Pretoria FM reports.
This comes after tourism minister Patricia de Lille and Google country director Alistair Mokoena signed a memorandum of understanding at Parliament on Monday.
Our ZS1DCC Disaster Management site for #amateurradio#hamradio in #CapeTown now has a 24/7 #VarAC chat service running on HF usually on 30m or 40m, and can be used to park or relay VMails anytime for operators in #SouthAfrica
My web based OpenWebRx receiver has been upgraded to the Plus version with aircraft location data etc

Impressed that there is a Bot now auto-posting City of #CapeTown alerts that were normally only on X. Wonder if it is active for other municipalities in #SouthAfrica - good to see more of these types of services appearing in the Fediverse.
@danie10@robertlogger I'm waiting to the new year to pitch our social media manager on our own, City of #CapeTown instance. I suspect the low volumes will result in reluctance, but that also means low risk.
There is a reasonable chance that the federation is the future of social tech, so it's worth experimenting, I think..
Going to finalise my talk for #DataConf (Cape Town) this weekend - what are some things you wish data people understood about org culture? Particularly non-technical &/ public sector orgs
@danie10 Ah, ja, I understand the frustration - for me, the real nadir was during the pandemic, where the best data available was a crowd sourced effort (credit to @vukosi and his research group), usually by reading gov official social media posts. A lot of government clearly just doesn't get it.
This being said, we're trying to do things differently at the City of #CapeTown. This talk will actually be about the experience of building a public, real time APIs - https://www.dataconf.co.za/agenda.html

Cape Town City libraries use technology to draw young patrons to the bookshelves: Read something, before you can use a tablet
Waiting times have increased due to the tablets’ overwhelming popularity, prompting the library staff to devise a creative solution. Those waiting their turn must read to a staff member before being allowed to use the tablets. This approach has produced remar ...continues

Don’t just blindly trust your mobile phone app when hiking or trail running around Cape Town, do these things as well!
Lesser used paths are often very difficult to follow, and a wrong turn can lead you quickly into difficulties, or even plunge off a 100+ metre drop, especially on Table Mountain. So do some extra research and planning before setting out for the first time on ...continues
