After CPAP #Recall, Philips Must Institute New Safeguards in Agreement With #DOJ
The settlement comes nearly 3 years after the company acknowledged that an industrial foam fitted inside its machines could degrade and release toxic substances into #patients' masks.
I’m really struggling with this #CPAP. When I use a chin strap strong enough to keep my mouth closed, it causes a serious morning pain in the TMJ. It still hurts 15 hours later. I just can’t make this work yet. I’ll keep trying. mouth tape is next
Back to #CPAP, I’m still in a phase where the device is waking me up 4 to 5 times a night for one reason or another. Normally I never wake up, even though I only slept 6 hours. I sure hope this phase passes because right now, I’m more exhausted during the day than I’ve been in a long time.
Okay #CPAP experts. Last night, my nostrils were irritated so badly, I couldn’t continue, I speculate that: a) the air tube needs cleaning (but it’s not even a week old), b) the auto climate control is off so the air was too warm. Do these sound plausible?
For those playing the #CPAP home game with me ,for the last two nights I’ve been using the nasal pillows. I’m using the medium size and putting a little Vaseline on my nose to prevent a soreness I felt the first couple of nights with that particular mask design. Best score so far: 7.6 hours of sleep, and only 0.9 events.
New #3DPrinting challenge today.
The silicone at the bridge of wifey's #CPAP is too thin, & results in tiny streams of wind forced into the corner of her eyes. No good, but if you push the silicone towards the nose about 5mm, the problem goes away.
Time to get measuring, before making some slip-on TPU pieces to fix the problem. It'll fit between the plastic bridge and the top of the silicone pushing it inwards.
Does this look freaking ridiculous? Yes. Yes it does. Will it work? 🤷♀️ maybe? I think those little wrap around flaps will need to be thicker, but I'm sure other things will need tweaking too, so first a test print... as soon as the printer frees up.
So much to print. So few printers. 😿
🤔 It's kinda effed-up that there's no one in the medical industry to make stuff like this for people. It's not like we all have bodies of exactly the same shape.
After a night of testing I've modified things based on user (wifey) feedback & am happy to present v2 of the #CPAP mask mod.
Also, my hands shook a little while measuring and I accidentally pierced the old silicone with the pointy bits of my calipers. 😿 Fortunately, she has replacements.
We've progressed to the "minor tweaks" stage of the #CPAP#3DPrinting mod. Here's the the current iteration. If anything changes it'll probably just be to extended it by 1mm or so.
We've been using painter's tape to hold it on during testing, but i think we'll use CA glue once we have settled on a shape.
Note: it's made from TPU so it's easy to get that weird wrap-around shape into position.
My new Evora full face #CPAP mask came today. I tried it on for a nap and it seemed like the most comfortable fit yet. Now I’m waiting for the heated air tube to arrive so I can crank up the humidity. I’m getting the hang of this.
#FDA Repeatedly Rejected #Safety Claims About Philips Breathing Machines, Emails Show
As Philips reassured patients that millions of recalled machines were safe, internal emails show federal regulators privately told the company its testing didn’t account for the impact of long-term harm from tainted devices.
If you use a Philips #CPAP machine, you might want to return it right now. 561 deaths have been linked to a failure where pieces of foam break off and are sent down the breathing mask where they can get inhaled.
Congressional Watchdog Will Launch Inquiry Into FDA Oversight of Medical Device Recalls
Sens. Dick Durbin and Richard Blumenthal asked the Government Accountability Office to investigate the regulatory agency, citing ProPublica and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports on the 2021 recall of Philips breathing machines.
Hi everyone. Hope everyone is having a good day so far. I'm doing good but very tired. Stayed up way too late doing stuff on my computer last night and didn't get enough sleep, and then I was asleep at least part of that time without my #CPAP machine, since it looked like I took the mask off during the night, so I probably didn't sleep as well. I've been sitting in bed following people with this new #Mastodon account, but I think I'm about to get up, get a second cup of #coffee, and try to get things done. That means I'll have to make my #dog Squeaker move since he's laying by my right foot right now and I would kick him if I tried to get up.
I have phone calls (ugh, how I hate phone calls) to make, email to check, and need to do at least a small workout for the day. Hating phone calls seems to be an #autistic or #neurodivergent thing. I've heard from a lot of others who feel the same way I do. I recently changed my phone number, so I'm in the process of calling everybody to update it and regain access to some of my accounts. Very sleepy and a little sore today, so we'll see how much I get done. #ActuallyAutistic#chronicIllness#sleepApnea#NEISVoid
Woke up absolutely exhausted 😩 #CPAP fell off my face during the night and the CGM stopped working and was borderline hypo all night. Had to reboot my phone for the Dexcom to reconnect via Bluetooth. Cancelled the day. Migraine. Back to bed. #Diabetes#ChronicIllness
Philips Recalled Breathing Machines in 2021. Chemicals of “Concern” Found in Replacement Machines Raised New Alarm.
Amid a massive recall in 2021, the medical device maker raced to overcome troubling questions about its replacement machines as customers waited for help.
Senators Call on GAO to Probe FDA’s Oversight of Medical Devices, Citing Series on Philips CPAP #Recall
Sens. Dick Durbin and Richard Blumenthal sent a letter noting how the #FDA missed opportunities to protect the public from faulty #MedicalDevices, citing reporting by ProPublica and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
'After tests showed that breathing machines made by Philips Respironics could spew dangerous particles and fumes into the lungs of patients, the company in April 2021 decided to stop shipping the devices from its factories near Pittsburgh. Philips notified the Food and Drug Administration and said it was considering a recall. But for the distributors of the devices, the company had another message: Keep selling them.'
