Extinguishing the #EV#Battery Fire Hype
The numbers don’t support persistent fears of #lithiumion conflagrations
“Despite the scapegoating of #EVs, global momentum, spurred by concerns about the consequences of continuing to burn #fossilfuels, is still moving in the direction of battery electrics”
“Convenient and affordable charging at/near home is core to the ecosystem but must be complemented by reliable public fast charging” https://spectrum.ieee.org/lithium-ion-battery-fires#electricvehicles
Yet another discarded “ #disposable” #vape in the park this morning.
This was a chunky one with a nice big 2,410mAh #rechargeable#lithium#battery in it.
Ironically it had a #USB-C charging port but no easy way to refill the fluid so still a bit of a #waste of #resources 🤷♂️
Motor #emissions could have fallen by over 30% without #SUV trend, report says
"A report showed SUVs now represented a majority of the new car market (51%).
Automotive companies market SUVs intensively as they provide the most profit: they are sold at premium prices but have a proportionally lower manufacturing cost.
The authors of the report called for governments to place restrictions on vehicle sizes to reverse the SUV trend."
"This includes large, heavy electric SUVs – while they have zero tailpipe emissions, they also have enormous #battery and energy demands, not to mention the fact they kill more pedestrians than any other vehicle.
To turn this around, the report calls for governments to set caps on vehicle size (on hybrid and electric as well as ICE) to reverse the SUV trend and help accelerate the shift to smaller #EVs – #Paris is proposing one such restriction right now."
To put it politely, this is greenwashing. To put it impolitely, calling these busses "green" or "zero emission" is a whopper of a lie.
If you read about these busses at the company's website, they're very careful not to reveal the source ("colour") of the hydrogen. https://www.transitsystems.com.au/hydrogen-bus-new
They're using grey hydrogen. "Grey" Hydrogen is not Zero Emission. It's made by extracting hydrogen from fossil gas, and there's no effort put into capturing the carbon during the processing.
These busses are just as polluting — considerably more polluting when you consider inefficiencies and losses due to processing, transport, and storage — as a bus powered by any other fossil fuel, but the pollution happens at a processing plant far away. The pollution is out of sight; out of mind.
@BinChicken There is no "zero emission" transportation on ruber wheels, since they'll inevitably emit particles from their brakes and microplastics from their tires whilst accellerating and decellerating.
That being said, hydrogen is a waste product of the fossil fuel industry and would otherwise get burned off via the safety fire...
Not to mention that the same "pollution out of sight" also applies to #battery-electric vehicles.
Fossil gas is not the bridge the fossil fuel peeps claim it is.
"Giant #batteries that ensure stable power supply by offsetting intermittent renewable supplies are becoming cheap enough to make developers abandon scores of projects for gas-fired generation world-wide.
The shift challenges assumptions about long-term gas demand and could mean #NaturalGas has a smaller role in the #EnergyTransition than posited by the biggest, listed energy majors."
"A growing domestic recycling industry, supported by billions of dollars in loans from the Energy Department and incentives in the Inflation Reduction Act, is being built to prepare for what will one day be tens of millions of retired EV #battery packs.
Before they are disassembled, however, studies show that around three quarters of decommissioned packs are suitable for a second life as stationary storage."
“Using #SodiumIon technology is not new but we think this is the first product ever completely free from critical raw materials. It is a fundamental breakthrough,” said Patrik Andreasson, Northvolt’s vice-president of strategy and sustainability. “This provides an option that is not dependent on certain parts of the world, including #China.” #EV

the UK's #battery problem is becoming ever more obvious... ne way to deal with it would be to have an overall #industrial strategy, but that would require a stable government with a clear long-term vision.
Its a while since the UK had such a government, and whatever #RachelReeves pious words, I'm not expecting Labour to be able to immediately shift the ship of state either.
The real problem is the electoral cycle & the media... a much bigger issue than just batteries!
„When transit organizations do buy alternatives, especially #hydrogen buses these days, they only do so where the countries and states they are in are subsidizing the buses, the refueling infrastructure and the hydrogen heavily. As soon as the hydrogen subsidies run out, they pivot to #battery electric.“
I manage a ful week of #commute on a cargo electric #bicycle. That is five trips of 5km one way. With 500Wh battery that gives 10Wh/km. An electric car does around 200Wh/km.
For the same commute distance that is 20× less #battery capacity needed. We should not focus on replacing all ICE cars with #electric cars. We should replace them with as many bikes as humanly possible.

You may recall a previous post about the problems at #battery start-up #BritishVolt (backer not completely paid bid price; unpaid wages etc.). Now a former employee has lodged a statutory demand for back pay, which if not paid in the next 21 days will likely trigger bankruptcy proceedings.
Its not a good look for the UK's attempt to be serious about investment in the #greentransition - it needs to me more than a seeming project to merely farm state-support (as many suspected it was!)
"The cathode is not made from the familiar mixture of #lithium and other metals. Instead, the primary ingredient is #zinc, which ranks as the fourth most produced metal in the world.
Eos’s batteries use a #water-based electrolyte (the liquid that moves charge around in a battery) instead of organic solvent."
This is intended to be a #GridBattery.
"#Battery giants are starting to put their money on new #sodium-based technology, a sign that there could be yet another shakeup in the industry that’s crucial for the #EnergyTransition.
Even with the recent slump in lithium prices, sodium is still a cheaper option.
Its clearest potential advantage is in storing excess electricity for grids."
