This is us next week. At Beau Vista orchards the early apples (Tom Putt) and Dyer’s Perry pears are ready for harvesting and fermenting into TeePee Cider. Early this year due to ideal grow conditions from Spring onwards . Woodcut by Chris Wormell

Waiting at the hairdresser so time for one of my periodic #ClearTheTabs threads on random stuff I have open in my #Firefox...

First up a paper I think @DrEvanGowan shared on Palaeo #SeaLevels from Australia that appear to confirm the vulnerability of #Antarctica to loss under #ClimateChange 1/many

The next paper is also about #ClimateExtremes - this time, how to attribute extreme weather events to #ClimateChange and the operAtional system in #aotearoaNZ

Nice paper shared by Jordis Tradowsky at the #NCKF symposium this month..

Daylight Saving starts in New Zealand on Sunday 24 September. There is a bit of discontent every year. So what do you think?

Please boost for wide coverage.

I am so proud of my Ngutukākā/Kākābeak. These are the first time it has flowered for me since I planted it. I wonder if it will attract the Tūī? 🏆

A supermarket in #AotearoaNZ launches an #AI meal planner which suggests people eat poison and concoct chlorine gas.

Do you think we'll ever move away from the #nztwits hashtag? Some of you have been here a while now, it'd be pretty cool to see something new/different

EmPenTen,

@zyk
I still use it sometimes but mostly I've moved to using #AotearoaNZ

@Essjax @EmPenTen @zyk #AotearoaNZ is a bit to long. Could we perhaps use #Kiwi or #KiwiNZ

It's time for a proper #introduction. Kia ora.

I'm an #ecology lecturer at #LincolnUniversityNZ and live in Ōtautahi-Christchurch. I'm interested in #EcologicalMonitoring, #BiologicalInvasions (esp. #weeds), and NZ #NaturalHistory (so much still to discover!). I'm site admin for #iNaturalistNZ #MātakiTaiao, the NZ node of #iNaturalist.

I'm @joncounts because I count a lot of nature (~17,000 species counts each month). See https://wildcounts.org.

Here are the monarch butterflies (orange) and cabbage white butterflies (white), both exotic species in #AotearoaNZ, that I counted in February 2022 between the Port Hills and the city centre.
Here are the house sparrows (white) and starlings (blue), both exotic species in #AotearoaNZ, that I counted in February 2022 between the Port Hills and the city centre. Note these species are largely absent from the hills but dominate the suburbs.
Here are the kahukura/red admiral butterflies (red, endemic species) and yellow admiral butterflies (yellow, Australian species now native in NZ), that I counted in February 2022 between the Port Hills and the city centre of Ōtautahi-Christchurch, New Zealand. Kahukura are mostly in the hills away from the city.
