Things I teach my kids:

• “No” is a complete sentence.
• If you’re not having a good time you can leave.
• Never make yourself smaller just to make other people more comfortable.
• It’s okay not to be okay.
• Don’t take criticism from someone you wouldn’t take advice from.
• Other people’s opinions of you are none of your business.
• Speak as kindly to yourself as you would speak to others.
• Be your own greatest cheerleader, always.

It’s never too late to learn these things.

It’s funny; so many of these things I learned as an adult as a product of Less Than Good Times and I wish I’d known them as a teen. Probably would have helped if I’d had decent role-models rather than having to self-parent for most of my life. Perhaps the biggest lesson was, “your feelings are valid”. How you choose to express and act upon them is variable, but you always have the right to feel how you feel and no one has the right to tell you otherwise.

My penchant for seeking out and collecting physical versions of things I enjoy (books, LPs, DVDs) had @dave refer to me jokingly as Gordon Deitrich in ‘V for Vendetta’. He’s not wrong. Now, more than ever, keep the physical items. As corporations like Apple have clearly shown, they want you to turn your back on creative “stuff” and, for me, that’s the place where humanity starts to die. It’s not junk, it’s love; love in the act of making, doing, and sharing ideas.

Back at denturist tomorrow at 8:30am - bite test day. Due to my commitments to volunteering at Highland Games (May 19) & participating in first dragon boating race on May 26, my final extractions are delayed til last week of May. That gives me time to heal up gums & take time off work & community activities (that requires talking to people) for a week.

@msquebanh I hate to break it to you but I seriously doubt a week will be enough. You’re going to be in a lot of pain and swelling, and talking / eating is going to be hard for at least the first three to six weeks. Please go easy and be kind to yourself.

@msquebanh Completely understand. It’s one of the reason I kept working as much as possible too. I think if you have to work, try to avoid doing anything too strenuous and don’t bend over too much—no heavy lifting—have some good pain killers / anti-inflammatory on hand (if you take them—cannabis is good too!) and have a bottle of warm salt water to rinse your mouth when you need it. Talking is going to hurt, so save your voice as much as you can. Also sleep as much as you can!
