New thread: I'm building my own game engine !

The goal is to support the needs for my custom FPS game project. 😄

Feature set goal:

  • Forward(+) renderer
  • Stencil/Shadow Volumes
  • Portals (with recursion)
  • FXAA and MSAA
  • Oren-Nayar diffuse shading
  • PBR Specular/Gloss workflow
  • Fancy Post-Effects (ex natural Bloom, SSAO)
  • HDR reflections (parallax corrected cubemap) + proxies
  • Blurry glass/window (like Doom 2016)
  • Parallax/Relief mapping + shadow

New step ! 🥳

Now that my shadow volume generation isn't borked anymore (and works with open meshes) I moved on to properly support the light itself with the shading.

Took the opportunity to rewrite my PBR stuff from scratch (ditching LearnOpenGL in favor of Filament).

While I'm still scratching my head on how to fix that smooth shading vs shadow volume masking, I at least got the point light attenuation working on ! 😃

Messing with it, hammering out the rough edges, and added a feature to make the core glow instead of black. Cuz of course I would.

From the ancient ar(t)chive: a unicycle robot animation made as a study of procedural animation.

Things like the robot's tilt angle, bend angle and antenna motion are driven by the position of the character model on a motion path.

Back then, in the early 2000s I was a 3ds Max beta tester for Autodesk. Max wasn't subscription-based yet.

Pixel Shader 2.0 is done, so glad too! there are a ton of nice features built in for everyone. Retro or new wave!

Afternoon mograph. More exploration of the techniques I was messing with this morning, using a curve deform on a point cloud. It's a pretty nice way to instance and animate a swarm of... things.

Many little multicolored things swim about in complex swarming patterns.

Afternoon mograph. A glowing sphere and a small singularity circle a group of wandering orbs. What separates orbs from spheres? Spelling and pronunciation, mainly.

As described in the post, a sphere and a singularity (okay, a spherical refraction zone with a dark center) circle a group of wandering smaller spheres. It's almost all very blue.

Making progress on the turtle mount after spending a lot of time relearning anatomy for the rider. Currently using my hard surface 3D skills to make clean geometry to take into zbrush later for detailing.

Does anyone have insight on working with blendshapes in a production pipeline? In any program, Blender/Maya/3ds/etc.

Topology will inevitably change over the course of a production, are there ways to make sure you don't redo tons of blendshape work? What if you want to transfer hundreds of blendshapes to a new character, but the topology isn't an exact match?

Blender unfortunately seems particularly limited, but maybe there's a plugin I'm unaware of?
